GREENSBORO, N.C.- Senior Charity Byrum (Winston-Salem, NC) made her first nationals final today in the 100 breast with a lifetime best time 1:02.1 as she headlined eight swimmers that competed for the Gardner-Webb swim team on Friday at the AT&T U.S. Winter Nationals in Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Byrum was able to break through in this her final time competing at the Winter Nationals, as last year Byrum put together a great swim in the 100 breast finishing with a season-best time of 1:02.80, only to find out she finished in 25th place and was the first alternate for the finals heat.
"It was so exciting to see Charity bust out a best time and finally make a national final after coming so close last year at the same meet," commented Gardner-Webb head swim coach Mike Simpson. "She has worked so hard this fall, & the smile on her face afterwards was a priceless picture!"
Byrum was not the only swimmer to have a great swim for the Runnin' Bulldogs on Friday, as it got great midseason swims from Lili Tóth (1:02.88), Connor Bos (50.96), and Nathan Lile (49.79), who swam in the 100 breast, 100 back, and 100 fly respectively.
Also competiting for the Runnin' Bulldogs on day three of the meet was: Giorgie Graves (100 fly- 56.45), Mary O'Doherty (100 fly- 57.75), Tyler Gomez (100 fly- 51.20), Brandon Searle (51.47), and John Baker (100 back) who swam a season-best time of 52.30.
The AT&T U.S. Winter Nationals concludes tomorrow with swims from Lauren Oglesby (1650 fr), Lile (100 fr), Toth (200 br), and Tyler Gomez (200 fly).
