Young Leads Gardner-Webb Throwers, Wins Weight Throw at JDL UCS Invitational

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Sophomore Alex Young led a trio of Runnin' Bulldogs who impressed in the men's weight throw, winning the event over the weekend at the JDL UCS Invitational.
Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) continued his hot start to the 2013-14 Indoor season with a 1st place finish in the men's weight throw, topping the field on his third throw with an event-best distance of 20.27 m.
Fellow LaVergne, Tenn. native Nathan Padfield took 11th (16.14 m) and sophomore A.J. White (Hurricane, W.Va.) tossed 13.56 m (22nd) for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Gardner-Webb's throwing contingent has been strong this season, led by Young, who owns the school record in both the men's weight throw and the men's shot put. Young has improved on his ground-breaking freshman campaign to post new personal bests in the shot put (16.95 m) and in the weight throw (20.95 m) in this his sophomore season.
Young's 20.95 m weight throw mark, achieved at the JDL Hilton Garden Invite earlier this year, currently ranks 12th in NCAA Division I. Young is one of just five underclassmen in the Top 12 of the event.
Padfield, a junior, has also put up a personal best this season, dating back to the JDL Kickoff event in December where he threw 16.85 m in the men's weight throw. Additionally, White has recorded personal best weight throw (13.80 m) and shot put (15.27 m) distances this season.
