Gardner-Webb Runs Past Western Carolina, 6-1, on Sunday

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Senior Ronia Hutterli won twice, as did fellow senior Jenny Lunde, sophomore Rokia Sacko, and freshman Catherine White as Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team earned a 6-1 win over Western Carolina at the Webb Tennis Complex on Sunday.
GWU (5-1) opened the match emphatically against an undermanned Catamounts squad, sweeping the three doubles positions to gain a 1-0 advantage early in the match.
Lunde (Oslo, Norway) teamed with Sacko (Montreal, Canada) at No. 2 doubles to help get the Runnin' Bulldogs rolling on Sunday, cruising to an 8-1 win over Western Carolina's Ruiz/Maguire.
At No. 1 doubles, Yasmin Doost (Bray, Maidenhead, England) combined with Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) for a dramatic 8-7 (7-3) win against Kissell/Bettiol to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the doubles sweep. Gardner-Webb's No. 3 doubles tandem, White (Rock Hill, S.C.) and fellow freshman Mary Walker Mixon (Atlanta, Ga.) won by default.
GWU kept its momentum rolling in singles play, winning at five of the six spots to defend its home court.
At No. 2 singles, Lunde earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bettiol, while Sacko cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win against Maguire at the No. 5 singles positions to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs on top.
At No.'s 3 and 4 singles, Hutterli and Valeriia Popko grinded out tough wins to help finish off the win. Hutterli defeated Ruiz 6-3, 6-4 while Popko (St. Petersburg, Russia) outlasted McLinden by a 6-4, 6-3 margin.
At No. 6 singles, White won by default.
Gardner-Webb will take its 5-1 record into its 2014 Big South opener this coming Wednesday, February 19, at Presbyerian (Clinton, S.C.). Wednesday's match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
