BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Senior Ashley
Rhyne (Crouse, N.C.) pitched a gem in game two of a
doubleheader against USC Upstate, surrendering one run and
scattering six hits, as the Spartans took both games of a
tightly-contested twin-bill at Varsity Field on Wednesday
afternoon.
USC Upstate (10-0) won the first game, 6-0, before edging
Gardner-Webb (1-7) in a 1-0 pitcher's duel in the night cap. The
Spartans collected 14 hits in the doubleheader, including a trio of
extra-base hits.
Samantha
Meenaghan (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) paced the Runnin' Bulldogs
with two hits, both in game one, while Savannah
Burns (Vale, N.C.) added a base knock of her own.
Jessica
Childers (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) took the ball the opener,
surrendering three earned runs on eight hits. Rhyne tossed a gem in
game two, allowing one run on six hits while stranding 10 Spartans
on base. Childers and Rhyne combined to hold USC Upstate's offense
to seven runs in the doubleheader - a unit which averaged nearly
eight runs per game through the first eight games of the
season.
Shellie Robinson led the way for USC Upstate with four hits in
eight at-bats, driving in two runs while also scoring three.
Maddison Keiffer and Erin Schattle each drove in two runs for the
Spartans as well.
USC Upstate's pitching staff held the Runnin' Bulldogs to three
hits on the day, led by a no-hitter from Anna Miller in game two.
Miller allowed just one walk in seven innings of work while
striking out 14. Hannah Alexander got the nod in game one,
scattering three hits and one walk across seven innings, while
striking out nine.
Game One: USC Upstate 6, Gardner-Webb

The Spartans opened the scoring in the top of the second,
plating two runs on a two-run single by Schattle to take an early
2-0 lead. Upstate would add three in the next inning, pushing the
advantage to 5-0 following a two-run single by Kieffer with two
outs.
Robinson tallied the final run of the contest in the fifth,
hitting a first-pitch solo home run to left.
Game Two: USC Upstate 1, Gardner-Webb

Miller and Rhyne proved to be the story of game two, engaging in
a tight pitcher's duel throughout the contest while combining to
allow just six hits, one run and six walks.
The Spartans scored the lone run of the game in the fourth
inning, when Cheyenne Griffin scored Robinson from second on an
infield single to first, giving USC Upstate a 1-0 lead and runners
on first and second with no outs.
After Kieffer walked to load the bases with no outs, Rhyne
stepped up and recorded three straight force outs at home, working
her way out of the jam with three tremendous at-bats to hold USC
Upstate to just one run in the inning.
Miller was equal to the task for the Spartans, surrendering a
second-inning walk to Megan
Gibbons (Benson, N.C.) before retiring the next 16 batters she
faced en route to her first no-hitter of the season.
Gardner-Webb returns to the diamond on Friday at the South
Carolina Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C., where the Runnin'
Bulldogs will take on Georgetown at 10:00 am, followed by host
South Carolina at 3:00 pm.
