
Runnin' Bulldogs Win Big South Opener, 6-1, at Presbyterian on Wednesday

Clinton, S.C. - Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team battled to win a tough doubles point and went on to prevail at five of the six singles positions, earning a 6-1 win at Presbyterian in the Runnin' Bulldogs' Big South opener of the 2014 Spring season.
GWU got wins at No.'s 1 and 2 doubles, winning at the top spot by an 8-5 margin thanks to stellar play from Ronia Hutterli and Yasmin Doost. Jenny Lunde teamed up with Rokia Sacko to win 8-6 at the No. 2 spot and give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
Gardner-Webb picked up singles wins at the No. 2-6 positions. Freshman Catherine White (Rock Hill, S.C.) won 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 6 position, Sacko (Montreal, Canada) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles, and Lunde (Oslo, Norway) picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spots.
Valeriia Popko (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) each came out on top in hotly contested matches at No.'s 4 and 3 singles, respectively. Popko won 6-4, 7-6, while Hutterli endured a marathon tiebreak to win 6-1, 6-7, 16-14.
Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team will look to keep its momentum rolling this weekend, traveling to face UNC Greensboro on Saturday, February 12th in a match slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
