
Gardner-Webb Rally Falls Short in 4-3 Loss at Campbell on Saturday

Buies Creek, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs rebounded after being swept in doubles play to win three singles matches, but were unable to overcome the early deficit in a tight 4-3 match at Campbell's Nisbet Tennis Center on Saturday.
Campbell (3-3, 1-0 BSC) won at all three doubles spots to capture a 1-0 lead entering singles play.
The Gardner-Webb rally started with a resilient effort from a pair of Runnin' Bulldog juniors playing at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions. Ernest Alberch (Torello, Spain) won at the No. 3 spot against the Fighting Camels' Rik Van Gerwen, prevailing 6-3, 6-4.
Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) outlasted Campbell's Dominik Kaniewski at the No. 4 singles position, battling to a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs in the match.
Gardner-Webb (3-7, 0-2 BSC) also got a key win from sophomore Jonathan Walker (Elkin, N.C.). Walker, playing at No. 5 singles, defeated Jean-Marc Krone in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) for the Runnin' Bulldogs' third singles win of the day.
Campbell won tight matches at No.'s 1 and 2 singles to hang on for the win Saturday.
GWU returns to action on Sunday, February 23 for a 12:00 p.m. match at UNC Greensboro.
