Charlotte Outlasts Gardner-Webb, 4-3, in Women's Tennis Action on Thursday

Charlotte, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs picked up three singles wins, getting a surge after doubles from the 4-6 singles positions, but were unable to overcome a slow start in Charlotte's 4-3 home win on Thursday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
GWU (2-1) was put in a 1-0 hole after Charlotte (1-2) prevailed at No.'s 2 and 3 doubles. At No. 1, Yasmin Doost and Ronia Hutterli teamed up to defeat Lisa Grosselius and Vitoria Pahlett by an 8-4 margin, the 49ers got the doubles point with wins at the other two doubles spots.
Charlotte swept the top three singles spots, winning at No.'s 1-3 to escape with a narrow home win. The match was kept close thanks to resilient efforts from Gardner-Webb's No.'s 4-6 singles players: Valeriia Popko, Rokia Sacko, and Catherine White, respectively.
Popko (St. Petersburg, Russia) came out on top versus Charlotte's Tyler Baker, winning her No. 4 singles match by a score of 7-6 (7-5), 5-5, (8-6).
Sacko (Montreal, Canada) won at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Macy Vonderschmidt to keep Gardner-Webb's hopes alive.
White (Rock Hill, S.C.) came back for a tough three-set win at the No. 6 singles spot, outlasting Charlotte's Jessica Pérez by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 score.
The sophomores at No.'s 4 and 5 singles, Popko and Sacko, are both 3-0 in singles play thus far this season.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Saturday, February 8 for matches against North Greenville and Wingate. GWU's match versus North Greenville is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. with the match against Wingate following immediately afterward.
