
A Trio of Runnin' Bulldogs Win Events at Mountaineer Open

Boone, N.C. - Sophomore Josh Wembolua won the men's 55 m hurdles, freshman Tyler Craig won the men's pole vault, sophomore Alex Young won both the men's shot put and weight throw events, and Brandaun Addison nearly set a GWU record in the 55 m dash, highlighting an impressive showing for Gardner-Webb at the 2014 Mountaineer Open Indoor meet.
Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) won the men's weight throw by over four meters, dominating the field with an event-long toss of 20.54 m. Junior Nathan Padfield (LaVergne, Tenn.) put up a distance of 15.98 m to finish 3rd, A.J. White (Hurricane, W.Va.) threw a personal best 13.80 m for 7th place, George Millar used a personal best distance of 13.05 m to finish 9th, and Jordan Smith tossed his career-best at 12.41 m to follow in 10th place in the event.
Young and White combined for a 1-2 finish in the men's shot put, and Smith (Chesterfield, Va.) added a 4th place showing in a strong event for Gardner-Webb. Young (16.59 m) led the way by equaling his personal best, White (15.27 m) followed with a personal best to take 2nd, and Smith (14.02 m) tossed in a third top 5 finish for GWU in the event.
Wembolua (Matthews, N.C.) raced to a 1st place finish in the men's 55 m hurdles, pulling away from the field to win in personal best fashion at 7.70.
Craig (Talking Rock, Ga.) and Samotis (Hendersonville, N.C.) went 1-2 in the men's pole vault, giving Gardner-Webb the top two spots in the event by vaulting 4.89 m and 4.78 m, respectively. Sophomore Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) achieved a top 5 finish in the event as well, rising up for a career-best height of 4.48 m.
Addison (Easley, S.C.) raced to a 2nd place finish in the 55 m dash in nearly rewriting the GWU record books by crossing the finish line in the fastest time of his career at 6.46. Addison's time in the event was just .05 behind school record-holder Kevin Prime's fastest 55 m time: 6.41.
In the women's weight throw, senior Jasmine Miles (Amelia, Va.) led the way with a 10th place showing, tossing 14.18 m. Freshman Sarah Mitchell (Roswell, Ga.) followed in 11th by tossing 14.14 m.
Michell led the way for the throwers in the women's shot put, achieving a 2nd place finish with a top distance of 13.38 m. Senior Stephanie Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) added a 12th place showing in the event, tossing 11.63 m.
Gardner-Webb got a 2nd place finish in the women's pole vault from freshman Elise Moffatt (Kennesaw, Ga.). The first-year Runnin' Bulldog rose up for a height of 3.45 m, tying for 2nd in the event.
In the women's long jump, sophomore Meredith Byl (Tucson, Ariz.) placed 2nd, leading the squad with a distance of 5.08 m.
Sarah Perkins (Gorham, Maine) was just off her personal best in the women's 55 m hurdles, achieving a time of 8.81. The sophomore's performance was good for 2nd best in the event.
Sophomore Kaylan Myers (Lexington, N.C.) tied for sixth in the women's high jump, clearing 1.57 m for the best performance of her career in the event.
In the women's 1 mile run, Gardner-Webb's Jenna Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) and Claire Cates (Hillsborough, N.C.) finished at 5:36.20 and 5:47.83, good for 6th and 8th in the event respectively.
In the women's 55 m dash, freshman Jordan Davis (Atlanta, Ga.) cracked the top 10 to lead Gardner-Webb in the event, sprinting to a time of 7.55. Kayin Mujahid (Philadelphia, Penn.), Perkins, and Byl finished in the top 20 of the event with times of 7.61 (14th), 7.63 (15th), and 7.67 (17th) respectively.
Davis also led Gardner-Webb in the women's 200 m dash, taking 4th place with a time of 25.98. Nicole Saxton turned in a 6th place showing in the event, racing to the finish line at 26.30.
In the men's triple jump, sophomore Chuboy Umeadi led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 4th place finish behind a distance of 13.82 m. Senior Terry Davis (Wilson, N.C.) competed in the men's long jump, placing 5th (6.57 m) wile Umeadi added a 7th place finish (6.33 m) for GWU in the event.
Senior Justin Loy (Burrington, N.H.) and freshman James Haynes (Charlotte, N.C.) turned in times of 4:54.08 and 5:04.05, respectively in the men's 1 mile run. Loy placed 2nd in the event while Haynes finished 4th.
The mid-distance contingent turned in solid showings in the men's 800 m run. Trey Crook (Lexington, N.C.) led the way with an 8th place showing (2:08.53), Nick Rogers was 9th (2:09.11), Loy took 10th (2:12.22), Aaron Cronk was 11th (2:13.67), Matthew Cook finished 12th (2:22.80), and Haynes timed in 13th (2:27.31).
In the men's 200 m dash, Joseph Martin (Broadway, Va.) and Richard Jules (Tampa, Fla.) were top 5, led by Martin's 3rd place showing thanks to a time of 23.02. Jules placed 5th, timing in at 23.26.
Gardner-Webb's impressive showing at the two-day Mountaineer Open, full of personal and event-best performances, figures to flow over as the 2013-14 Indoor season carries on. The Runnin' Bulldogs turn to the JDL USC Invite, next, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete on Friday, February 14th through Saturday, February 15.
