Rhyne (Crouse, N.C.) pitched a five-inning no-hitter in game
two, and Kellie
Beres (Greenville, N.C.) drove in five runs to lead
Gardner-Webb to a doubleheader sweep of South Carolina State on
Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.
Gardner-Webb (10-17) scored seven early runs in game one,
including six in the third inning, en route to a 7-1 win before
shutting out South Carolina State (4-12), 10-0, behind Rhyne's
first no-hitter as a Runnin' Bulldog. The Runnin' Bulldogs tallied
22 hits in the twin-bill, including five extra-base hits, while
batting .431 as a team and outscoring South Carolina State,
17-1.
Beres and Samantha
Meenaghan (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) paced the Runnin' Bulldogs
with four hits each, as Savannah
Burns (Vale, N.C.) and Taylar
Pridgen (Trinity, N.C.) both added three base knocks. Beres
drove in a team-high five runs, while Mahaila
Irvin (Canton, N.C.) and Scarlett
Harris (Sherrills Ford, N.C.) both recorded a home run and
three RBI.
Jessica
Childers (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) got the nod in game one,
surrendering one run and striking out three to earn the victory.
Rhyne took the ball in game two, tossing five scoreless innings
while surrendering no hits, no walks and striking out one to
complete her first no-hitter at Gardner-Webb.
Jasmine Greer and Jazmin Robinson each tallied two hits for
South Carolina State, as Greer drove in the Bulldogs' lone run of
the day.
Vianney Gomez made the start in game one, surrendering six
earned runs on 11 hits and striking out three. Robinson and Jareece
Sayles combined for eight earned runs on 11 hits in game two,
totaling four innings of work.
Game One: Gardner-Webb 7, South Carolina State

Gardner-Webb opened the scoring in the bottom of the first,
taking a 1-0 lead on a grounder by Gibbons following a leadoff
single by Meenaghan. The Runnin' Bulldogs pushed the advantage to
7-0 with six runs in the third, stretching the advantage to 3-0
with a two-run single by Beres, before Irvin plated three with a
bomb over the center field wall. Harris capped the frame with a
solo shot to right center.
South Carolina State fought back in the fifth, trimming the
margin to 7-1 with a run-scoring single by Greer. Childers would
hold the Bulldogs off the scoreboard in the final two frames,
stranding four South Carolina State runners en route to her sixth
win of the season.
Game Two: Gardner-Webb 10, South Carolina State

The Runnin' Bulldogs struck early in the bottom of the first,
plating three runs on an error and two groundouts to take a 3-0
lead. Gardner-Webb would add four in the second, pushing the
advantage to 7-0 on an RBI single by Meenaghan, a two-run double by
Beres, and a grounder by Harris.
A three-run third capped the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs,
widening the gap to 10-0 following a trio of run-scoring singles by
Meenaghan, Beres, and Burns. Rhyne would take over from there,
retiring 15 of the 17 batters she faced, including the final six
following a pair of fourth-inning errors to cap the victory and
close out the no-hitter.
Gardner-Webb is back in action on Wednesday, March 19 when the
Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Athens, Ga. to take on No. 17 Georgia in
non-conference play at 6:00 pm.
