Runnin' Bulldogs Storm Past SCAD, 7-2, on Friday for Second Straight Win

Savannah, Ga. - Nikita Zverkov, Brendan Dempsey, and Ernest Alberch each went 2-0 on the day as Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team won on the road against the Savannah College of Art and Design, 7-2, in non-conference action on Thursday.
GWU (7-9, 0-2 Big South) won two of the three matches in doubles play to take control of the match early, starting strong in its second match in as many days.
The Runnin' Bulldogs won at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles, winning 9-8 (4) and 8-2, respectively.
Gardner-Webb's momentum swung into singles play, where the squad won 5 of the 6 singles matches.
Benjamin Kaszás (Budapest, Hungary) won for the second straight day at No. 1 singles, taking a 6-2, 6-2 decision over the Bees' Jack Anton.
At No. 2 singles, Zverkov (Moscow, Russia) held off a furious rally from SCAD's Bobby Brand to prevail in a 6-1, 7-6 (1) match.
Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) outlasted Joao Freitas at the No. 3 singles position, giving Gardner-Webb a win at that spot by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
At No. 4 singles, Alberch (Torello, Spain) cruised, defeating Yulin Liu by a 6-0, 6-2 margin.
SCAD (0-1) picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot, as Darnell Sgubin won for the second time on the day with a win against GWU's Jonathan Walker.
At No. 6 singles, Pepe Batalla (Barcelona, Spain) rounded out the scoring, winning 6-2, 6-3 against Manatsa Mazimbe.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on March 19 at 2:00 p.m., staying on the road for a tilt with Big South foe Presbyterian in Clinton, S.C. Wednesday's match marks the Runnin' Bulldogs' third League match of the 2014 season.
