Beres (Greenville, N.C.) collected two hits and Breanna
Blakeley (Huntersville, N.C.) and Megan
Champion (Knightdale, N.C.) each drove in a run to pace the
Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday on the first day of the Winthrop
Tournament, as Cleveland State rallied for a 12-2 win in the
morning session before Robert Morris defeated Gardner-Webb, 5-0,
later in the day.
Cleveland State (6-5) rallied from an early deficit to defeat
Gardner-Webb (4-12) by a score of 12-2 in the first game of the
day, before the Bulldogs dropped a 5-0 contest to Robert Morris
(12-5).
Beres tallied a team-high two hits on the day, as Blakely,
Champion and Samantha
Meenaghan (Atlantic Beach, Fla.) each added a base knock.
Meenaghan and Amanda
Gomes (Coral Springs, Fla.) both scored for the Bulldogs while
Blakely and Champion each drove in a run.
Jessica
Childers (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) took the ball against
Cleveland State, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in four
and one-thirds innings. Alyssa
Gutierrez (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Summer
Darnell (Hampstead, N.C.) combined to pitch the final two and
two-thirds innings, surrendering four earned runs on six hits. Ashley
Rhyne (Crouse, N.C.) got the start against Robert Morris, going
the distance while allowing five runs and striking out three.
Game One: Cleveland State 12, Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb got on the board first in the bottom of the third,
taking a 1-0 lead when Champion drove in Meenaghan with an RBI
single. The Vikings answered with two runs in the fourth, taking a
2-1 advantage following a solo home run by Alyson Broschk. The
Runnin' Bulldogs evened the tally at 2-2 in the bottom of the
inning after Gomes reached on an error and scored on a double by
Blakely.
Cleveland State countered with five runs in the fifth before
adding one in the sixth, claiming an 8-2 advantage through an
infield single by Alisha Silva. The Vikings capped the scoring with
four runs in the seventh to equal the final margin of 12-2.
Game Two: Robert Morris 5, Gardner-Webb

Robert Morris opened an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first,
pushing across the game's first run on an RBI single by Samantha
Santillo. The Colonials added one run in the third and another in
the fourth to push the margin to 3-0, before Chelsea Siar drove in
the final runs of the contest with a two-run single in the fifth.
Robert Morris starter Haileigh Stocks went the distance, scattering
two hits across seven innings while striking out sixth and walking
none.
Gardner-Webb is back in action on Saturday at the Winthrop
Tournament, squaring off against Northern Colorado at 10:00 am and
Wagner College at 12:00 pm.
