
Alex Young, Tyler Craig Win Individual Events at Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships

Blacksburg, Va. - Alex Young defended his individual title in the men's weight throw, freshman Tyler Craig claimed top honors in the men's pole vault, and freshman Kayin Mujahid collected All-Big South honors at her first Conference Championships to lead Gardner-Webb track & field at the Friday-Saturday Big South Indoor Championship meet.
Gardner-Webb's women's track & field squad took 7th, accumulating 27.5 points over the two-day meet. The Runnin' Bulldog men picked up 58 points to claim 5th place at 2014 Big South Indoor Championships.
Craig (Talking Rock, Ga.) and sophomore Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) turned in All-Conference performances in the men's pole vault. Craig took 1st in his first-ever collegiate Conference Championships, clearing 4.95 m, while Marsengill claimed 3rd place in the event with a personal best height of 4.70 m.
With the performance, Tyler Craig earned Men's Freshman of the Year honors.
Mujahid (Philadelphia, Penn.) recorded an All-Big South performance in the women's high jump. Competing in her first Big South Championship meet, Mujahid rose up to clear 1.62 m and end up in a three-way tie for 3rd place in the event.
Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) picked up valuable points, winning the men's weight throw on Friday to defend his title in the event. The sophomore tossed 20.31 m to place 1st.
Junior Nathan Padfield (LaVergne, Tenn.) threw his career best to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 7th place finish in the event, recording a personal best distance of 17.28 m. GWU freshman Jordan Smith put up a personal best distance of 14.33 m (16th) and sophomore A.J. White threw 13.45 m (21st) in the event.
Three Runnin' Bulldogs recorded Top 10 finishes in the women's pole vault, led by freshman Elise Moffatt's 4th place finish. The Kennessaw, Ga. native cleared 3.50 m to lead GWU in the event.
Sophomore Megan Melton (Riverside, Calif.) added a 6th place showing in the event, clearing a personal best 3.50 m, and sophomore Kailey Robinson (Connelly Springs, N.C.) tied for 7th, also recording a personal best in the event with a height of 3.50 m.
In the women's weight throw, freshman Sarah Mitchell (Roswell, Ga.) shattered her personal best to take 8th place. The Runnin' Bulldog rookie threw 16.31 m, the best of her career thus far.
Seniors Jasmine Miles (Amelia, Va.) and Kyntoya Hansford (Miami, Fla.) were Top 20 in the women's weight throw. Miles threw 14.41 m (16th) and Hansford tossed a season best 14.14 m (t17th).
In the women's shot put, Mitchell added a 4th place finish, putting up another personal best distance at 14.07 m to score more points for Gardner-Webb. Senior Stephanie Hamilton (11.01 m, 19th) and Hansford (10.13 m, 25th) also threw for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Senior Olivia Moody (Plano, Ill.) took 6th place in the women's pentathlon, posting a season best 3,068 points to score for GWU in the event. Moody posted a personal best in the long jump portion of the event at 4.83 m and added season bests in the 60 m hurdles (9.90), high jump (1.57 m), shot put (9.95 m), and 800 m run (2:38.04).
A pair of Runnin' Bulldogs recorded personal best times in the women's 5,000 m run. Freshman Jenna Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) finished her race in 19:11.08, good for 21st, and sophomore Claire Cates (Hillsborough, N.C.) recorded a time of 19:35.23 to place 25th.
In the women's 200 m dash, freshman Jordan Davis (Atlanta, Ga.) sprinted to a time of 26.11, just off her personal best achieved earlier this season. Davis finished in 17th place in the event.
Seniors T'Keyah Bell (Cherryville, N.C.) and Ashley Slate (High Point, N.C.) led Gardner-Webb in the women's 60 m dash, finishing their races in 8.52 (19th) and 8.73 (21st) respectively. Freshman Kim Stout (Hendersonville, N.C.) followed in 22nd (8.78).
In the women's 400 m run, sophomore Sarah Perkins (Gorham, Maine) raced to a personal best time, leading the Runnin' Bulldogs by breaking the 59.0 barrier for the first time in her career. Perkins crossed the finish line at 58.94 (15th).
The quartet of Davis, Nicole Saxton, Mujahid, and Perkins teamed up for a 5th place finish in the women's 4x400 m relay, racing to the Runnin' Bulldogs fastest time of the season in the event at 3:54.14.
Cates, Merideth Byl, Katie Spiro, and Ford teamed up to finish 9th in the women's distance medley relay, posting a total time of 13:14.26 in the event.
Senior Terry Davis (Wilson, N.C.) finished with All-Conference honors in the men's triple jump, placing 3rd to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event. Davis' 14.66 m, a personal best, was bolstered by sophomore Chuboy Umeadi's 14.13 m, which was good for 6th place in the event.
In the men's shot put, White (Hurricane, W.Va.) led Gardner-Webb, placing 4th thanks to a personal best throw of 15.84 m. Smith (Chesterfield, Va.) added key points for GWU in his first-ever Conference meet, placing 7th with a distance of 14.83 m.
Sophomore Josh Wembolua (Matthews, N.C.) finished 5th in the men's 60 m hurdles, racing to a time of 8.33 in finals of the event. Wembolua recorded a time of 8.34 during prelims of the event, qualifying 5th heading into finals.
Sophomore Brandaun Addison posted a personal best 60 m dash time during prelims on Friday, qualifying for finals by crossing the finish line at 6.91. In finals, Addison (Easley, S.C.) placed 8th with a time of 6.98.
Gardner-Webb put two in the Top 12 of the men's heptathlon. Junior Ben Bell achieved 6th place in the event, posting a personal best 4,574 points in the event, and sophomore Titus Hamilton totaled 4,012 points to take 11th.
Bell (Greensboro, N.C.) posted personal bests in the 60 m dash (7.32), the pole vault (3.60 m) and the 1,000 m run (2:54.52) during the event and added season bests in the long jump (6.48 m) and the high jump (1.75 m).
Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) put up personal bests in the high jump (1.66 m) and the pole vault (3.60 m) during the event and added a season best in the long jump (6.04 m).
Seniors Justin Loy (Burrington, N.H.) and Drew Ford (Wasilla, Alaska) finished 19th and 20th, respectively, in the men's 3,000 m run. The veteran distance specialists finished at 9:44.50 and 9:51.16, respectively.
In the men's 5,000 m run, senior Mike McClay (Lawrenceville, Ga.) placed 20th, timing in at 20:39.92.
The quartet of Malik Crawford, Richard Jules, Josh Wembolua, and Joseph Martin teamed up to record a 5th place finish in the men's 4x400 m relay, racing to a season best time of 3:23.47.
Trey Crook, Joseph Martin, Nick Rogers, and McClay combined for a 7th place finish in the men's distance medley relay, teaming up for a time of 10:50.42.
