
Coastal Carolina Holds Off Gardner-Webb In Series Finale

CONWAY, S.C. --- Sophomore Scarlett Harris (Sherrills Ford, N.C.) drove in Savannah Burns (Vale, N.C.) with a double in the fifth inning Sunday, as Coastal Carolina held off a late push by Gardner-Webb en route to an 8-1 win and a Big South Conference series sweep.
Coastal Carolina (20-9, 3-0 BSC) plated eight runs on 10 hits, tallying a pair of extra-base knocks while holding Gardner-Webb (10-21, 0-3 BSC) to one run on five hits.
Kellie Beres (Greenville, N.C.), Elizabeth Williams (Whiteville, N.C.), Jill Blank (Leola, Pa.), Burns and Harris each picked up a hit in the contest, as Harris drove in her sixth run of the season. Jessica Childers (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) got the start for the Runnin' Bulldogs, tossing the first five innings while striking out four. Alyssa Gutierrez (Wake Forest, N.C.) pitched the final frame, surrendering three hits and two walks.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Coastal plated five runs on an RBI single by Kiana Quolas and a grand slam by Amanda Daneker. Coastal added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Morgan Noad to stretch the lead to 6-0.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fought back in the fifth, trimming the margin to 6-1 when Burns and Harris stroked back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame, before Quolas stranded runners on first and third with one out. Coastal countered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, equaling the final margin of 8-1 on RBI singles by Kory Hayden and Jessie Winans.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Saturday, March 29 when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Campbell in a Big South doubleheader at 1:00 pm at Varsity Field.
