
Sacko Wins 17th Singles Match, GWU Falls 6-1 Versus #62 Winthrop

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb picked up another singles win from a budding sophomore at No. 5 singles, but #62 Winthrop swept doubles en route to its fourth Big South win of the year, a 6-1 victory at the Webb Tennis Complex on Wednesday.
Gardner-Webb (9-9, 2-5 Big South) got another win from sophomore Rokia Sacko, who recorded her team-leading 17th singles win at the No. 5 spot during Wednesday's League matchup with Winthrop.
Sacko (Montreal, Canada) outlasted the Lady Eagles' Ekin Gunaysu on court No. 5 duirng singles play, winning by a 6-2, 6-4 margin to produce the Runnin' Bulldogs only point of the day.
Winthrop, who moved up to No. 62 in the latest ITA rankings, improved to 4-0 in the Big South. The Lady Eagles got wins at No.'s 1, 2, and 3 doubles to create momentum heading into singles play, and responded by taking singles wins at five of the six positions.
The match at No. 2 doubles was the most dramatic of the day, with the Lady Eagles' duo of Caitlin Cridland and Gunaysu prevailing with a late surge to win by a score of 8-7 (8-6).
Gardner-Webb is scheduled to host Coastal Carolina in its second-to-last regular season match. The Runnin' Bulldogs' match versus the Chanticleers is set for Saturday (March 29) at 2:00 p.m. at the Webb Tennis Complex.
