
GWU Falls at Campbell, 6-1, in Big South Play on Saturday Afternoon

Buies Creek, N.C. - Playing in its second Big South road match in three days, Gardner-Webb was unable to overcome a slow start in doubles play and fell at the hands of the Campbell Fightin' Camels, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
GWU (7-5, 1-2 Big South) fell behind 1-0 early as Campbell (7-5, 1-1 Big South) captured the opening doubles point by sweeping all three positions.
The Fightin' Camels' got 8-3 wins at No.'s 1 and 3 doubles, and Karolina Chernaya/Amelie Reichart outlasted GWU's Jenny Lunde and Rokia Sacko to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-7 win.
Campbell won five of the six singles matches to seal the Big South home win.
At No. 2 singles, Campbell's Natasha Afridi cruised past Lunde (Oslo, Norway) 6-1, 6-2. Ana Maria Ortiz survived a tight first set against Valeriia Popko (St. Petersburg, Russia) and pulled away to win in two sets (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 4 singles spot.
Yasmin Doost battled back to push Karolina Chernaya in set two at No. 1 singles, but was unable to push the match to three sets, falling 6-1, 7-5.
Tamara Stanic outlasted Ronia Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) 7-5, 6-3 in a tight match at No. 3 singles. Catherine White fought to force a tiebreak after a slow start against Ewa Telenga at No. 6 singles, but dropped a close 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 decision.
Rokia Sacko (Montreal, Canada) picked up GWU's lone win on the day, persevering for a 7-6, 1-6, 10-7 win at the No. 5 spot. With the win, the sophomore improved to 11-1 at No. 5 singles on the year.
Saturday's outcome marks the third straight loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs following a 7-2 start to the season.
Gardner-Webb will look to end its three-match skid on Tuesday, March 11 when the Runnin' Bulldogs step out of Conference to play at Elon. Tuesday's match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
