Mountaineers Win Four Singles Matches to Down Gardner-Webb in Regular Season Finale

Boone, N.C. - Gardner-Webb grabbed an early lead with two doubles wins, but Appalachian State countered by winning at four of the six singles positions to earn a 4-3 win in both squad's regular season finales.
GWU (9-12, 2-7 Big South) won dramatic decisions at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to jump on top 1-0 heading into singles play.
Jenny Lunde (Oslo, Norway) and Rokia Sacko (Montreal, Canada) teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Clare Cox/McKayla Zupan by an 8-6 margin. At the No. 3 doubles spot, Mary Walker Mixon (Atlanta, Ga.) and Teodora Stanciu (Fót, Hungary) knocked off Appalachian State's Brianna Armellino/Megan Mullen tandem 8-7 (7-2) to seal the opening point for the visitors.
The Mountaineers countered with singles wins at the No. 1, 2, 3, and 5 spots.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got singles wins from Sacko (Montreal, Canada) and freshman Catherine White (Rock Hill, S.C.).
Sacko, a sophomore, improved to 20-1 overall in singles play on the year. Playing up at the No. 4 spot for the first time this season, Sacko defeated Armellino 6-4, 7-5.
White held down the No. 6 spot, outlasting Zupan 6-3, 6-0.
Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team turns its attention to the 2014 Big South Tournament, taking place on Gardner-Webb's campus at the Webb Tennis Complex April 14-18.
