
#2 Winthrop Advances Past #7 Gardner-Webb, 4-1, in Big South Quarterfinals Thursday Afternoon

Boiling Springs, N.C. - #2 Winthrop won a tight doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions and took three singles to advance past #7 Gardner-Webb, 4-1, in Big South Quarterfinal action on Thursday at the Webb Tennis Complex.
The Eagles advance to play the winner of #3 Liberty vs. #6 Coastal Carolina.
Thursday's Quarterfinal contest started with Winthrop earning an 8-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles from Juan Pablo Boada and Corey DeCandia, who defeated GWU's freshmen tandem Nicholas Lofrumento/Tyler Macy.
The Eagles went on to win by tiebreak (7-3) at No. 2 doubles from Steven Patrick/Tremayne Mitchell, who defeated Brendan Dempsey/Jonathan Walker.
Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) wrapped up an 18-6 singles season with a win at No. 3 singles, knocking off the Eagles' Steven Patrick 6-1, 6-3 The junior went 7-1 in regular season Big South singles matches this season and was named the League's No. 4 Flight Champion prior to the Tournament.
Winthrop won at No. 6 singles (Michael Chen), No. 2 singles (Dylan Comerford), and No. 5 singles (Juan Pablo Boada) to advance to the Semifinal round, to be played on Friday.
