
Four-Run Fourth Lifts Radford Over Gardner-Webb In Big South Finale

RADFORD, Va. --- Scarlett Harris (Sherrills Ford, N.C.) and Megan Champion (Knightdale, N.C.) each drove in a run for Gardner-Webb, as Radford utilized a four-run fourth inning to rally for a 9-2 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs in the rubber game of a Big South Conference series on Sunday afternoon.
Radford (22-23, 14-7 BSC) plated nine runs on 10 hits in the contest, as Gardner-Webb (16-35, 6-17 BSC) tallied two runs on seven base knocks in a game which featured a total of eight errors (Gardner-Webb 3, Radford 5).
Kellie Beres (Greenville, N.C.), Megan Gibbons (Benson, N.C.), Jessica Childers (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.), Savannah Burns (Vale, N.C.), Taylar Pridgen (Trinity, N.C.), Champion and Harris each collected a hit in the contest, while Champion and Harris both drove in one run. Childers and Pridgen each crossed the plate for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Childers got the start for Gardner-Webb, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out one in three and one-third innings. Alyssa Gutierrez (Wake Forest, N.C.) pitched the final two and two-thirds, surrendering two runs on four hits and striking out two.
Gardner-Webb plated the game's first run in the second, taking a 1-0 lead on a double by Harris following a leadoff bunt single by Childers. Radford answered with two runs in the home half, claiming a 2-1 advantage with a two-run homer by Summer Robinson before a leadoff long ball by Jessie Hutchens in the third pushed the margin to 3-1.
The Highlanders plated four more in the fourth, stretching the advantage to 7-1 following a two-run single by Hutchens. Gardner-Webb fought back with a run in the sixth, trimming the margin to 7-2 on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Champion that scored Pridgen.
Radford countered with a pair of tallies in the home half, capping the scoring with two runs on a wild pitch.
Gardner-Webb is back in action on Tuesday when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Western Carolina in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00 pm to close out the regular season.
