BOILING
SPRINGS, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's Matt
Fraudin struck out a career-high 13 batters and went the
distance in a 6-1 win over Longwood Friday night in the series
opener.
Fraudin
allowed only four hits and did not walk a batter in his fifth
career complete-game effort and second this season. The win was the
second in a row for Gardner-Webb (12-18, 4-6 Big South).
Longwood
(14-17, 4-6 Big South) struck early, getting a leadoff single from
Matt Dickason in the first and a hard hit RBI double from Kyri
Washington one batter later for a 1-0 lead. Gardner-Webb starter Matt
Fraudin (2-3) bounced back with three consecutive strikeouts to
strand Washington at third base.
Gardner-Webb
rallied to take the lead for good in the bottom of the second,
collecting three hits to plate a pair of runs. Matt
Simmons led off with a sharp single to left and moved to third
on Henry
Rundio's single to left.
Rundio
moved to second on the same play when the throw from left got away,
and Ryan
Hodge followed with a two-run single up the box for a 2-1
lead.
Fraudin
mowed through the Lancers in order in the top of the third,
striking out a pair, and Scott
Johnson made the score 3-1 with a deep sacrifice fly. That
scored Scott
Coleman from third, with his double to deep left center getting
the 'Dogs on base with one out earlier in the frame.
Fraudin
fanned two more in the fourth and reached the 10-strikeout mark
after punching out another in the fifth inning.
After
allowing the two hits to start the game, he sat down nine Lancers
in a row before allowing a leadoff hit in the fourth. He then
retired 14 in a row before a fielding error in the eighth, and
recovered to get out of that inning with no damage.
Blair
Huggins legged out a single with one out in the seventh, and
came around to score on a fielder's choice RBI from Tyler
Best to push Gardner-Webb's lead to 4-1. Rundio had an RBI
double to plate Simmons in the eighth, and later scored from third
on a wild pitch for a 6-1 margin.
Fraudin
recorded his 13th strikeout of the game to start the ninth, and got
a pair of high pop ups to end the game.
Friday
night marked the fourth start of the season that Fraudin has lasted
at least 8.0 innings, and his sixth start of 7.0 innings or
more.
Gardner-Webb
managed eight hits in the game, with Hodge (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and
Rundio (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2B, RBI) leading the charge. Nazzaro
(1-for-5), Coleman (1-for-4, run), Simmons (1-for-3, 2 runs) and
Huggins (1-for-4, run) also had hits for the Runnin'
Bulldogs.
Aaron
Myers (4-2) was tagged with the loss on the mound for Longwood,
scattering six hits and allowing four runs (two earned) in 7.0
innings of work. He fanned four and walked none in the
game.
The
Lancers collected four hits, with Delk (2-for-4, 2B) the lone man
with more than one.
Friday
night's game was quick, finishing in just two hours and 10
minutes.
The
two teams will play again on Saturday at 2:00 pm at John Henry Moss
Stadium / Bill Masters Field.
