Gardner-Webb Falls to No. 22 North Carolina in Preseason Exhibition

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team fell to preseason No. 22 (NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Men's Pre-Season Top 25) University of North Carolina by a score line of 7-0 in its preseason opener on Friday evening at Fetzer Field.
"There is a lot of work that needs to be done before our first contest," said head coach Tony Setzer. "We are very fortunate that it was an exhibition."
The Tar Heels struck for four goals in the opening ten minutes of play, including a brace from Andy Craven, as UNC took a 4-0 advantage into the break. Senior Denzel Clarke (Atlanta, Ga.), the reigning national runner-up in total goals, taking Gardner-Webb's lone attempt at frame.
Sophomore keeper Matthew Swan (Newport, South Wales, UK) made six saves through the opening 59 minutes of play, while junior Tristan Lain (Indianapolis, Ind.) played the final 31 minutes between the pipes, recording four stops.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continue their preseason slate on Monday, August 18 at preseason No. 11 Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. Gardner-Webb will play its final match of the preseason on Friday, August 22 against NCAA Division II King College (Tenn.) at 7:00 p.m. on Greene-Harbison Field.
