SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Shelby Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover H.S.) and Brandi Arey (Huntersville, N.C. / W.A. Hough H.S.) each had goals for Gardner-Webb, but Wofford score a late equalizer and capped the win on a strike from Faith Lifer in the 98th minute for the 3-2 victory.
The game was the season opener for both teams.
The Runnin' Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, as Nagle chipped the ball to Hooe, who then shot it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and 12th of her career.
GWU looked as if it was going to take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break, but Wofford would tie the game at one in the 43rd minute. Hannah Washko fired a shot towards the net, which was blocked by a Gardner-Webb defender, but Maureen Buff managed to corrale the rebound and place her shot in the upper corner of the goal, for her first goal of the season.
The score would remain tied at one, as both teams headed into the locker room for the halftime break.
Starting the second half, Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass. / UMass Dartmouth) replaced senior Amy Schmitt (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge H.S.) in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Both teams came out strong in the second half, as the game would remain tied 15 minutes into the second stanza.
Ashley Carmean (Ashburn, Va. / Briar Woods H.S.) laid the ball off beautifully for Arey who shot the ball past the keeper into the upper 90 portion of the goal, to give Garder-Webb a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute. The goal for Arey was the fourth of her career.
Wofford would tie the game at 2 in the 74th minute on Buff's second goal of the match. Mary Beth Bleekrode received the ball off a deflection and crossed the ball into the box, which was finished by Buff.
The Runnin' Bulldogs and the Terriers would remain tied at two after 90 minutes of action, sending the game into overtime.
Emily Burton (Westerville, Ohio / Olentangy Orange H.S.) had the first chance of the extra period for GWU, as she put a great shot on frame, which was stopped by Kara Boggs.
Lifer vollied in a cross from Chelsea in the 98th minute, to give Wofford the 3-2 victory over Gardner-Webb .
Wofford outshot GWU 24-11 for the match. Carmean and Arey led the Runnin' Bulldogs with two shots on goal.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Jacksonville State for its home-opener. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Greene-Harbison Field.
