Women's Soccer Comes Up Short At Mercer

MACON, Ga. - Shelby Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover H.S.) scored her second goal of the season and Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass. / UMass Dartmouth) recorded seven saves, but the Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team (0-3) fell by a score of 2-1 to Mercer University (1-2) on Friday evening.

Sydney Brogden opened the scoring for Mercer in the ninth minute, as she received a cross from Brianna Stampler and finished from a close distance, to put the Bears up 1-0.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had a tough time mustering up an offensive attack in the first half, only registering one shot, but would go into the halftime break down trailing by just one goal.

Chauvin remained solid in goal for GWU, and despite a strong offensive attack by Mercer, GWU continued to trail by just one goal with 20 minutes left in regulation

Maddie Clark was finally able to get a shot past Chauvin, as she headed in a cross from Tessa Patton in the 83rd minute, to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb came right back, as Hooe netted her second goal of the season in the 87th minute to cut the Mercer lead to 2-1.

The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to press on offense, but fell by the 2-1 margin to Mercer.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Sunday for a non-conference matchup with Chattanooga. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
