Strong Start Lifts Wofford Over Gardner-Webb, 3-0

BOILING SPRINGS --- Wofford scored two goals in the opening 32 minutes of play, including a fifth-minute strike from Nestor Jaramillo, en route to a 3-0 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Wofford (1-1) held Gardner-Webb (0-2) to eight shots in the match, including three on frame, while forcing Runnin' Bulldog goalkeeper Matthew Swan (Newport, South Wales, UK) into nine saves. The Terriers attempted eight corners to Gardner-Webb's four in the contest, while sending 14 shots toward goal in the first half.

Ali Al-Gashamy (Kristiansand, Norway) led the Gardner-Webb attack with three shots, including one on frame, as Swan made nine saves between the pipes to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Filipe Conceicao (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Jake Kennedy (Shelby, N.C.) each added a shot on frame.

Jaramillo, Matthew Aurednik and Carlos Dominguez Gonzalez each found the back of the net for the Terriers, as Ryan Hurst and Will Puckett both picked up two assists. Garrett Closs made three saves between the pipes for Wofford.

Jaramillo opened the scoring for Wofford in the opening seconds of the fifth minute, giving the Terriers an early 1-0 lead after settling a cross from Hurst and finishing inside the near post. Aurednik would double the advantage to 2-0 midway through the 32nd minute, taking a long pass from Puckett and sending a blast into the upper 90 from 18 yards out.

Perhaps the best chance for the Runnin' Bulldogs came in the 56th minute, when Kennedy unleashed a rocket from distance that was parried safely away by Closs.

Dominguez Gonzalez would add a late strike in the 79th minute, pushing the lead to 3-0 with a diving header off a corner from Puckett to cap the afternoon's scoring.

Gardner-Webb is back in action on Saturday, September 6 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on USC Upstate at 7:00 p.m.
