CHATTANOOGA, Tenn - Brandi Arey (Huntersville, N.C. / W.A. Hough H.S.) and Jessica Ferguson (Lawrence, Kan. / Lawrence Free State H.S.) each scored a career-high two goals, as the Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team (1-3) put on an offense display as it defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1-3), 7-2, for its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium.
The seven goals for the Runnin' Bulldogs are their highest single game total since Sept. 3, 2004, when they scored eight, in an 8-1 victory over VMI.
Also scoring for GWU were Shelby Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va. / Hanover H.S.), who scored for a second straight game, and Annie Ross (Cairo, Ga. / Cairo H.S.), who netted the first goal of her career.
Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass. / UMass Dartmouth) got the start in net for the second straight match for Gardner-Webb.
Amy Schmitt (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge H.S.) replaced Chauvin in the 55th minute, and recorded one save in 35 mins of action.
Gardner-Webb outshot Chattanooga by a 17-8 margin and were very precise in its shot selection, placing 10 of its 17 shots on goal, both of which were season highs for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Ferguson opened the scoring up for Gardner-Webb in the 40th minute, as she received a pass from Tori James (Fayetteville, Ga. / Whitewater H.S.), and placed it into the open frame to give GWU a 1-0 lead. The goal for James was the first of the season and first goal of her career.
Three minutes into the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs would extend their lead to 2-0, on Arey's first of two goals on the afternoon.
Arey would strike again in the 52nd minute, as she took a pass from Hooe and netted her third goal of the season, which ties a career high for goals in a season.
Hooe, Ferguson, and Ross would all add goals in the second half to send Gardner-Webb to the 7-2 victory over the Chattanooga Mocs.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to Greene-Harbison field for its next match on Friday (Sept. 5) when they host the Troy Trojans. Kickoff for Friday's match is set for 7:00 p.m.
