GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Gardner-Webb volleyball alum Emily Holte has been named an assistant coach for the UNCG volleyball team according to an announcement Friday by head coach Corey Carlin.
"I am thrilled to see Emily Holte following her passion for the game," exclaimed Gardner-Webb head coach Leo Sayles. "Emily set herself apart early in my tenure at GWU as someone who truly understands the game. Watching her coach at camps, I could see how she instilled her love for the game in younger players. I believe she has a great opportunity at UNCG, and a great career in front of her.
"She is coaching under a great teacher of the game who also has a great passion for volleyball as well," added Sayles. "I wish Emily the best, and am praying for success for her, Coach Corey Carlin, and the entire UNC-Greensboro Volleyball program!"
Holte, a recent graduate of Gardner-Webb, played for the Runnin' Bulldogs from 2010-2013, earning a starting role during her junior season and keeping her spot through her senior campaign.
"I am very grateful for the opportunity to begin my coaching career at UNCG," Holte said. "It's exciting to have a chance to be a part of the staff and I can't wait to get started."
"Even though Emily is just starting out of the gate in her coaching career, she came highly recommended to us as someone that has the attributes you look for in a young and up-and-coming coach," Carlin remarked. "That assessment was definitely validated during the hiring process.
"She comes from an area of the country where the volleyball IQ is very high and she has been in the gym with great volleyball coaches and trainers. This has given her a great enthusiasm for pursuing a career in coaching while also having a realistic grasp on the expectations and responsibilities for a position like this. We are looking forward to working with her and helping her grow toward her potential as a young coach."
In 2013, her senior season, Holte served as a team captain and finished second on the squad in total kills and kills per set. She was also third in hitting percentage and blocks per set. Her .241 hitting mark is currently the eighth highest in a single season in program history. Holte's 2012 campaign saw her lead GWU in aces and aces per set.
Holte owns camp coaching experience, working clinics in Boiling Springs, N.C. and also her native state of Minnesota. She also served as a reporting intern for the Foothills News Channel in Shelby, N.C. where she hosted the television show "Day Trippin'" and co-hosted "Cleveland County, Etc."
