September 01, 2014 | Wrestling
BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb wrestling released its 2014-2015 schedule Monday, a traditionally strong slate that begins in early November.
Gardner-Webb will have six home matches in Paul Porter Arena this season, including Southern Conference matches against VMI (December 3) and Chattanooga (January 16). GWU will also battle Binghamton (January 9), Duke (February 4) and both Ohio and Cleveland State (February 22) on its home mat.
"I am really looking forward to seeing our guys compete this year against this schedule," said head coach Daniel Elliott. "We have some challenging matches our first month on the mat, which will give our guys an opportunity to get our name out there, as well as gauging where we are.
"The schedule definitely gives our guys a chance to compete and win in big matches and prepare for the Southern Conference and NCAA Tournaments. We have a good mix of teams on our schedule from many of the wrestling conferences, which will hopefully help our RPI at the end of the year. As a staff we have a responsibility to prepare our team for success at the end of the year, and scheduling is a big part of that. This schedule was constructed to help our young men best prepare for success in March."
Gardner-Webb opens the season on November 2 in Boone, N.C., taking on Buffalo and Cumberland that afternoon. The Hokie Open (November 9) and a match at Virginia (Nov. 15) are followed quickly by matches with Virginia Tech and North Dakota State on November 16 in Blacksburg, Va.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will also have a road date against in-state foe NC State (November 22) and will battle Indiana on February 15.
The Southern Conference slate will see Gardner-Webb host VMI and Chattanooga, while traveling to Appalachian State, Campbell, The Citadel, Davidson and SIU-Edwardsville.
