NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Belmont's Nat Hubert scored a brace, finding the back of the net once in each half, to lead the Bruins to a 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb in the final match of the Belmont Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Belmont (1-5) outshot Gardner-Webb (1-4) by a 14-5 margin, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half, while attempting seven corners to the Runnin' Bulldogs' two.
Senior Denzel Clarke (Atlanta, Ga.) paced the Runnin' Bulldog attack with three shots, including one on frame, while Ali Al-Gashamy (Kristiansand, Norway) and Patrick Gurser (Franfurt, Germany) each put one on goal. Matthew Swan (Newport, South Wales, United Kingdom) made four saves for Gardner-Webb.
Hubert led the way for Belmont with two goals, putting three of his four shots on frame, while Joao Fonseca, Matt Vuylsteke and Adriano Balani each put one attempt on goal. Grayson Rector stopped each of the three shots he faced to keep a clean sheet for the Bruins.
Belmont opened the scoring at the 10:00 mark, taking an early 1-0 lead when Hubert tallied his first of the afternoon off a free kick. Clarke nearly equalized for Gardner-Webb in the 26th minute, forcing Rector into a skillful stop to preserve the advantage.
The Runnin' Bulldogs came out firing in the second half, engineering a pair of brilliant chances in the 53rd and 67th minutes before Belmont doubled the margin to 2-0 in the 76th, when Hubert converted from the spot following a Gardner-Webb foul in the penalty area.
Gardner-Webb returns to the pitch on Wednesday when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Clemson, S.C. to take on Clemson at 7:00 p.m.
