Gardner-Webb Women's Tennis Opened Up the 2014 Fall Season at the Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team kicked off its 2014 fall season participating in the Charlotte Invitational. Campbell, Wofford and UNC Charlotte were represented along with Gardner-Webb at the Charlotte Invitational.
Due to inclement weather in the Charlotte area throughout the weekend Gardner-Webb only had the oppurtunity to face off versus Wofford and Campbell in Singles play.
Gardner-Webb faced off against the Terriers of Wofford on Friday afternoon and compiling wins in all six flights. Senior Yasmin Doost started things off in Flight No. 1 defeating Wofford's Catherine Martin in a 6-4, 6-2 match. Junior Rokia Sacko coming off a great spring 2014 season continued to play well in Flight No. 2 defeating Wofford's Kelli Karas in a 7-5, 6-3 match.
A pair of Gardner-Webb newcomers Stina Magnusson and Sarah Rieckmann both started off their GWU careers with wins in Flight's No. 3 & No. 4 respectively. Magnusson defeated Lauren Reid of Wofford 6-4, 7-5 and Rieckmann earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Wofford's Samantha Russell.
To round out Gardner-Webb's match against Wofford sophomores Catherine White and Mary Walker Mixon defeated their opponents. White defeated Mareli Sanchez 7-5, 6-3 and Mixon the only Gardner-Webb player whose match went the distance held on to win a tough 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 match over Taylor Carlson.
Against Campbell on Saturday Catherine White added to her on Friday win by picking up her second win of the Invitational at Flight No. 5 against Campbell's Camila Valencia in a solid 6-0, 6-1 win, which would prove to be Gardner-Webb's only against the Camels in singles.
Gardner-Webb played each team represented in doubles matches with the Flight No. 2 team of freshman Sarah Rieckmann and junior Rockia Sacko playing together for the first time picked up a solid, and Gardner-Webb's lone doubles, victory of the weekend on Friday over Campbell's Maud Mraz and Anna Maria Ortiz in an 8-3 match.
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team will return to action Friday, September 20 through Sunday, September 22 at the USC Upstate Fall Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
