SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Sydney David (Acworth, Ga. / North Paulding H.S.) scored the game-winner in the 105th minute off a pass from Justine Ibarra (Puyallup, Wash. / Puyallup High School) to give the Gardner-Webb University women's soccer (3-4-0) team a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate (1-6-0) on Sunday afternoon.  

The goal for David was the first of the season and the first of her career, and the victory for GWU was its second in a row. 

Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass. / UMass Dartmouth) got the start in net for the Runnin' Bulldogs, and made three saves to earn her first shutout of the season.

Gardner-Webb played a well balanced match on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, as they recorded 14 shots, and limited the Spartans to just five.

Defense was the story of the first half, as both teams combined for just five shots. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs forced the action in the second half, outshooting USC Upstate by a 7-4 margin, forcing Ellen Bright to come up with four big saves to keep the game tied at 0, as the game would head into OT.

With just five minutes left in the second overtime, the game looked as if it were headed to a scoreless draw, but David managed to get to a lose ball, off a pass from Ibarra, and put it past the keeper to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the 1-0 victory.

" We played really well day. We had a lot of good chances, but we couldn't get the ball past the keeper, said head coach Mike Varga. The girls efforts finally paid off, as they were able to get the ball past the goalie in OT."

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Friday (Sept. 19) when they travel to face Phoenix of Elon University at 7:00 p.m.
