Clemson Bests Gardner-Webb, 6-0

CLEMSON, S.C. --- The Clemson Tigers struck for three goals within a 12-minute span midway through the first half, and added a trio of strikes in the second 45 minutes en route to a 6-0 victory over visiting Gardner-Webb on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

Clemson (4-3) outshot Gardner-Webb (1-5) by a 19-11 margin in the contest, including an 11-5 advantage in the second half, while attempting nine corners to the Runnin' Bulldogs' two.

Denzel Clarke (Atlanta, Ga.) led the way for Gardner-Webb with three shots, including two on frame, while Craig Swaby (Ware, England) added an attempt on goal. Arjun Jung (London, England) and Bryce Wells (Marietta, Ga.) each made two attempts at goal as well. Matthew Swan (Newport, South Wales, United Kingdom) made four saves in the contest.

Iman Mafi paced the Clemson attack with a brace, connecting on both of his attempts at goal, while Oliver Shannon, T.J. Casner, Saul Chinchilla and Thales Moreno each added a goal. Diego Campos picked up a pair of assists, as Shannon, Chinchilla, Moreno, Manolo Sanchez, Paul Clowes, Amadou Dia, Michael Melvin and Ara Amirkhanian each tallied a helper as well. Michael Zierhoffer and Chris Glodack combined for a four-save clean sheet.

Mafi put Clemson up early with both of his strikes, scoring twice inside of seven minutes to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage with a diagonal shot in the 23rd minute, Clarke produced a pair of chances for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the 22nd and 27th minutes, forcing a pair of saves by Glodack.

Chinchilla pushed the margin to 3-0 in the 28th, sending the Tigers into the interval with a three-goal lead. Moreno and Shannon stretched the gap to 5-0 with two goals in the opening six minutes of the second half, as Casner capped the scoring with a 76th-minute strike.

Gardner-Webb is back in action on Tuesday, September 23 when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Coastal Carolina to open their Big South slate at 7:00 p.m. at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
