ELON, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team (3-5) saw its two-game winning streak come to an end, as it fell 2-0 to Elon (4-4) in a non-conference match on Friday evening.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had a tough time putting together an offensive attack, as they were outshot by a count of 10-5, and trailed in corner kicks, 10-3.
Sophomores Brandi Arey (Huntersville, N.C. / W.A. Hough H.S.) and Sydney David (Acworth, Ga. / North Paulding H.S.) each had two shots for the match to lead the attack for Gardner-Webb.
Taylor Glenn scored her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to put the Phoenix up 1-0, as that would remain the score at the halftime break.
Sydner Schilling increased the lead to 2-0 for Elon, as she netted her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute.
Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass. / UMass Dartmouth) got the start in net for the Runnin' Bulldogs and was replaced at the start of the second half by Amy Schmitt (Waxhaw, N.C. / Marvin Ridge H.S.).
Head Coach Mike Varga had these comments after the match " Defensively, we played well for the most part tonight. Elon is a team that plays in the air and they are good at what they do. We needed to do a better job at keeping the ball at our feet. The focus is now the Big South and I am happy where we are, as we get ready for conference play."
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Wednesday when it opens conference play at Winthrop. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
