Cockrell Lifts Gardner-Webb Over Wofford, 3-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Tyler Cockrell (Tulsa, Okla.) turned in one of her best performances of the season on Saturday evening against Wofford, tallying 16 kills on 19 swings and adding six blocks to lead Gardner-Webb to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory in the final match of the Spartanburg Courtyard Classic.

Gardner-Webb (5-10) won the match by scores of 15-25, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-23, hitting .330 as a team while holding Wofford (5-8) to a .246 clip on the attack. The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded 12 blocks in the contest to the Terriers' six.

Cockrell led the way for Gardner-Webb with 16 kills and a blistering .789 hitting percentage, while Tyra Montour (Kennesaw, Ga.) added 11 smashes and freshman Sophia Esposito (Coroapolis, Pa.) chipped in 10 kills and a .417 attacking clip. Heather Feldman (Eden, N.Y.) tallied 41 assists and seven digs, as Anna Pashkova (Iowa City, Iowa) and Kaelyn Dyson (Holly Springs, N.C.) chipped in seven blocks and 19 digs, respectively.

Bella Santoro paced the Terriers with 16 kills, as Alex Holland and Liz Buterbaugh added 12 and 11 smashes, respectively. Molly Mayo chipped in 33 assists, while Jessica Graham recorded 15 digs.

The Terriers opened the first set with a 10-1 surge before Gardner-Webb responded, closing the gap to 13-9 with an 8-3 run that was capped by a Cockrell kill. Wofford quickly countered with a 6-0 spurt, pushing the advantage to 19-9 before capping the frame with a Santoro smash.

Gardner-Webb answered in the second, stringing together an 8-0 run to take a 13-6 advantage on a smash by Montour. After Wofford countered with a 3-0 spurt, the Runnin' Bulldogs responded with an 8-4 stretch, widening the gap to 21-13 with a Cockrell smash.

The Terriers would fight back once again, cutting the margin to 22-18 with a 5-1 spurt before Gardner-Webb regained control, closing out the set with three of the next five points to even the match at 1-1 on an Esposito smash.

The Runnin' Bulldogs carried the momentum into the third, battling back from an early 5-4 deficit to take a 14-8 lead on the heels of a 10-3 surge. Wofford would answer with an 8-3 spurt, closing the gap to 17-16 on a GWU miscue.

Gardner-Webb quickly countered once again, pushing the Terriers to set point at 24-17 following back-to-back kills by Cockrell and Feldman. Wofford refused to give in, fighting off a trio of set points before Montour handed the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-1 lead in the match with an emphatic smash.

Wofford responded in the early moments of the fourth, rallying from a 6-5 deficit to take a 10-7 lead on a Santoro kill. The Runnin' Bulldogs would counter with a 3-1 spurt, closing the gap to 11-10 with an Esposito smash. Gardner-Webb continued to chip away over the next several minutes, claiming a narrow 17-16 advantage before Wofford answered with a 4-0 spurt, retaking the lead at 20-17 on a block by Holland and Buterbaugh.

The Runnin' Bulldogs refused to give in, fighting back to even the tally at 22-22 before taking a 23-22 lead on a block by Cockrell and Taylor Lillard (Victorville, Calif.). After Santoro answered with a smash for Wofford, Cockrell and Feldman shut the door, as Cockrell put down an emphatic kill before combining with Feldman for a block to cap the set and the match.

Gardner-Webb is back in action on Sunday when the Runnin' Bulldogs host North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m. and Savannah State at 6 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
