Freshman Prostakov Wins Flight 5 Singles Title to Lead Men's Tennis at 2014 49ers Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Freshman Yaroslav Prostakov stepped up big as a newcomer to win all three of his matches at the No. 5 singles position, along with seven other wins from five different flight positions at this weekends three-day 49ers Invitational hosted in Charlotte, N.C. from September 19-21st.

Host team Charlotte and the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb were joined by Elon and Richmond in this weekend's very competitive Invitational.

Prostakov (Moscow, Russia) playing in just his second Collegiate Invitational earned the flight championship at No. 5 singles by defeating Charlotte's Alex Calott 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 in Sunday's match to claim the flight. The freshman started off the weekend with a solid singles win over Elon's Chris Humphreys, as Prostakov edged him 6-4, 6-0.

Prostakov also played a strong match on Saturday winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 over Noah Fenton of Richmond.

Freshman Adam Schmidt (Lund, Sweden) playing in his first Collegiate Invitational at the No. 7 position had a strong weekend picking up a win on Sunday over Charlotte's Carl Solik 6-1, 7-5, and comfortably beating Chris Gleason of Elon 6-0, 6-0 on Friday.

Ernest Alberch continued to play well for the Runnin' Bulldogs also securing two singles wins at the No. 3 Flight over the weekend. The junior from Torello, Spain opened up his weekend fighting back to beat Elon's Neal Port 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, and also defeated Richmond's Caleb Troy 6-4, 6-2.

Juniors Nikita Zverkov and Jonathan Walker each picked up singles wins beating Alex Hahn of Richmond 6-4, 6-4 and Elon's Dan Sablik 6-1, 7-6(3) at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions respectively, with Sophmore Nick Lofrumento also picking up a singles win at the No. 8 flight over Josh Cook of Charlotte 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday's match.

Each of the four doubles positions picked up one win at this weekend's Invitational starting with the No. 1 team of Zverkov and Albrech winning on Sunday afternoon 8-6 over Charlotte's Cisti and Calott.

The No. 2 team of junior Benjamin Kaszas and Prostakov managed a doubles win Saturday defeating Trent/Quenard of Richmond 8-5.

Senior Brendan Dempsey teamed up with the freshman Schmidt to also win on Saturday defeating Richmond's Fenton/Aronson in a comfortable 8-2 fashion.

To wrap things up on Sunday afternoon Walker and Lofrumento got their doubles victory at the No. 4 position outlasting the Charlotte team of Solik/Cook 8-4.

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team will return to action this coming week on Friday, September 25-26th when they will play host at the 2014 Gardner-Webb Fall Classic in Boiling Springs, N.C.
