BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Alissa Jones headed in a cross in the 85th minute to give Troy (4-2) the 1-0 victory over the Gardner-Webb University women's soccer team (1-4) on Friday evening at Green-Harbison stadium.
Mikki Lewis recorded one save for the Trojans to earn her second shutout of the season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs had a tough time mustering up any offense, as the Trojans limited GWU to only three shots for the match.
Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, Mass. / UMass Dartmouth) got her second straight start in net for Gardner-Webb and turned away four shots for the game.
Troy outshot Gardner-Webb by an 8-2 margin in the first half, but Chauvin played solid in net for the Runnin' Bulldogs, and both teams headed into the halftime break deadlocked at zero.
Offensively in the second half, the Runnin' Bulldogs managed two corner kicks, but were unable to put the ball past Lewis.
The game looked as if it were headed to overtime, but in the 85th minute, Jasmine Fahrnbauer crossed the ball to Jones, who vollied it into the right side of the net to lift Troy to the 1-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Monday (Sept. 8) when it heads to Lexington, Va for the first of a six-game roadtrip to face the Virginia Military Institute. Kickoff for Monday's match between the Keydets and the Runnin' Bulldogs is set for 4 p.m.
