GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Tyra Montour (Kennesaw, Ga.) recorded 17 kills and Anna Pashkova (Iowa City, Iowa) added a match-high 29 digs, as the Furman Paladins rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Gardner-Webb in a five-set thriller on Tuesday evening.
Furman (4-3) won the match by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22 and 15-8, attacking at a .231 clip on the evening, as Gardner-Webb (1-7) posted 12 blocks and 67 digs.
Montour led the way for Gardner-Webb with 17 kills and a .359 hitting percentage, adding eight digs, as Heather Feldman (Eden, N.Y.) chipped in a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs. Pashkova recorded a match-high 29 digs, while Taylor Lillard (Victorville, Calif.) posted 10 kills. Sophia Esposito (Coroapolis, Pa.) and Tyler Cockrell (Tulsa, Okla.) each tallied eight kills, as Cockrell notched seven blocks.
Annie Bierman paced the Paladins with 18 kills, while Ashton Gregory and Amelia Bohlander added 16 and 12, respectively. Christen Sikora and Andrea Fisher each chipped in nine smashes, while Meg DeMaar and Payton Frappier tallied 20 and 16 digs, respectively. Jo Wilks recorded a double-double with 13 digs and a match-high 58 assists.
Furman jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first set before Gardner-Webb responded, fighting back with an 8-3 run to even the tally at 10-10 following an ace from Feldman. The Paladins quickly countered with a 5-1 spurt, claiming a 15-11 advantage with a kill by Christen Sikora.
Gardner-Webb answered once again with an 11-5 run, taking a 22-20 lead following an emphatic kill from Dyson. The Runnin' Bulldogs would close out the set from there, tallying three of the final five points of the frame to take a 1-0 lead in the match on a Dyson smash.
The Paladins battled back early in the second, opening the frame with a 7-2 run that was capped by a Gregory kill. After Furman stretched the advantage to 12-6 with five of the next nine points, Gardner-Webb answered with a six straight, evening the tally at 12-12 following a Lillard smash.
The Runnin' Bulldogs kept pushing, taking a 17-13 lead with another Lillard kill to cap a 5-0 spurt and force a Furman timeout. The break worked to the Paladins' advantage, as Furman strung together a quick 3-0 spurt to cut the margin to 17-16 following back-to-back kills by Gregory.
After the Runnin' Bulldogs pushed the lead to 22-20 on a Montour smash, Furman countered with five of the next six points to rally for a 25-23 victory in the second set, evening the match at 1-1.
Furman carried the momentum into the third, tallying four of the set's first five points before Gardner-Webb answered, stringing together a 9-5 run to take a 10-9 lead on a Dyson kill.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued to push the tempo over the next several minutes, stretching the margin to 17-11 following an emphatic solo block by Cockrell. Gardner-Webb would close out the set from there, capping the frame with an 8-5 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match following a Montour smash.
The fourth set opened with neither team gaining much of an edge until Gardner-Webb launched an 8-2 run to offset a 9-7 deficit, claiming a 15-11 advantage with a kill from Cockrell. Furman would quickly counter with a 6-0 spurt to take a 17-15 lead following a Gregory smash.
After Gardner-Webb evened the tally at 17-17 with back-to-back points, Furman responded with a 4-0 spurt to open a 21-17 advantage on a Bierman kill. The Runnin' Bulldogs would answer once again, closing the gap to 22-20 with a Montour smash and fighting off a pair of set points before the Paladins forced a decisive fifth frame on a Fisher kill.
The Paladins carried the momentum into the fifth, jumping out to a quick 5-1 with back-to-back aces from Fisher. Furman would push the lead to 11-4 before Gardner-Webb responded with three of the next five points, trimming the margin to 13-7 on a Montour kill. The Paladins quickly countered with two of the next three, closing out the set and completing the come-from-behind victory with a Gregory smash.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, September 12 against Texas Tech at 12 p.m. and Incarnate Word at 4:00 p.m. on the first day of the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
