BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Charity Byrum captured the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke but Georgia Southern won the first event of the meet and never looked back as it defeated the Gardner-Webb women's swim team 144.5-112.5 on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles got off to a great start in the dual meet finishing 1-3-4 in the first event of the meet, the 200 yard medley relay. Georgia Southern won the event with a time of 1:49.29 and was followed by the Gardner-Webb "A" team that finished with an overall time of 1:50.01.
Lauren Oglesby got the Runnin' Bulldogs back on track in the next event finishing first in the longest event of the meet, the 1000 yard free (10:35.30). Oglesby finished the event on a very high note swimming her fastest split during her last 50 yards (30.65).
The Eagles put some distance between themselves and GWU winning the 200 free (1:55.41) and the 100 back (58.93), but Byrum kept Gardner-Webb within reaching distance winning the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.36.
Georgia Southern put the meet of out reach taking home first place finishes in the next four events, 200 fly (2:06.38), 50 free (23.76), 100 free (52.27), and the 200 back (2:05.07).
The best event of the day for GWU came in the 200 breast where Byrum and Toth finished 1-2 for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Byrum finished the event with a time of 2:27.28 and was followed by Toth who went 2:27.77.
Giorgie Graves put a stop to the Eagles four consecutive wins, placing first in the 100 fly (58.13) and picking up nine points for GWU.
Gardner-Webb returns to competitive action on Jan. 23-24 when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to face the College of Charleston.
