Women's Basketball Drops Conference Matchup To UNC Asheville On Saturday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Shonese Jones scored a game-high 16 points as UNC Asheville (4-13, 3-5 BSC) shot 42.9% from the floor and played stifling defense limiting the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team (7-11,3-6 BSC) to just 25.4% shooting in a 64-55 victory by UNCA in a Big South Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.

Olivia Parker and Jessica Heilig each had nine points to pace the offense for GWU and Candace Brown hauled down seven rebounds for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb grabbed 21 offensive boards but could not convert the rebounds into points, as GWU was limited to just 11 second chance points.

Chatori scored 15 points off the bench for the Bulldogs as UNCA got great production off its bench outscoring GWU 34-20. KJ Weaver hauled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Bulldogs, as UNC Asheville did a great job of driving the ball into the paint and passing the ball to its post players scoring 28 points in the paint compared to just 12 for Gardner-Webb.

UNC Asheville took an early 14-4 lead on a jumper by Major with just over 13 mins to go in the first half, before GWU got back-to-back layups from Williams and Currie to cut the defecit to six (14-8) with 11:14 left in the first period.

Bacl-to-back baskets by Leah Wormach with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half capped a 15-4 run by the Bulldogs to match their largest lead of the first half (29-12).

Gardner-Webb would cut the lead down to seven as Currie went 2-2 from the free-throw line, but back-to-back free-throws by Khalia Webb would get the lead back to nine for UNCA at the halftime break.

The Bulldogs led for the entire second half, but GWU cut the lead to just five on a Heilig layup with 3:02 left in regulation, but the Bulldogs handled the GWU pressure down the stretch and would go on for the 64-55 victory.

Garder-Webb returns to action and looks to snap a two-game losing streak when it heads to High Point, N.C. to face the Panthers on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
