HIGH POINT, N.C.- Kaylah Keys scored 20 of her game-high 24 points after halftime and High Point shot 63.3%, outscoring GWU 48-33 in the second half in a 72-57 victory by the High Point women's basketball team (12-6, 8-1 BSC) over Gardner-Webb (7-12, 3-7 BSC) on Tuesday evening in the Millis Center.
High Point had a tremendous night shooting the ball, hitting 27 of its 56 attempts for a 48.2% clip, including going 6-14 from behind the three point line.
Gardner-Webb held Big South preseason First-Team selection Stacia Robertson to just 13 points on 5-11 from the field, but Robertson did a great job of rebounding the ball hauling in 9 boards and also added five blocks in the victory.
Jessica Heilig score 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the offense for GWU, while Olivia Parker chipped 10 points and six boards to round out the double-figures scores for the Dogs. The Runnin' Bulldogs used their size to outrebound the Panthers 46-37, including grabbing 25 offensive rebounds to just 10 for High Point, but Gardner-Webb struggled shooting the ball hitting just 21 of its 70 attempts (30.0%).
The Runnin' Bulldogs got off to a quick burst starting the game on a 9-0 run over the first three minutes.
Big South preseason Player of the Year Kaylah Keys drilled a three-point to get the Panthers on the board (11-3) with 16:36 remaining in the opening half.
Senior point guard Mayhana Dunovant would answer back with her first three-pointer of the ball game to extend the Dog's lead to its largest of the first half, 14-4 with just over 14 minutes left in the opening period.
Robertson scored five of the next seven points, as the Panthers would go on a 7-0 run to cut the defecit to just three (14-11) with 8:14 left in the first half.
Gardner-Webb led for the remainder of the first half extending its advantage to as much as five points, and despite outebounding High Point 28-16, including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds, both teams would head into the halftime break tied at 24.
Ashante Richard scored the first points of the half for the Panthers to give High Points its first lead of the game 28-26 less than a minute into the second half.
The Runnin's Bulldogs would grab the lead right back 29-28 when Heilig scored a jumper and hit the ensuing free-throw to covert the old fashioned three-point play.
With just over 15 minutes remaining, Dunovant scored her seventh point of the game to cut the GWU defecit to just two (37-35),but the Panthers responded with a 8-0 run to extend their lead to double-digits with 11 minutes to go in regulation.
High Point led for the remainder on the game extending its lead to as much as 18 with 6:02 left on Keys' fouthh three-pointer of the game. Gardner-Webb would get as close as 11 but High Point would hold on for the 72-57 victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs take a week off before they return to action next Tuesday when they travel to Va. to take on Radford at 7:00 p.m.
