RADFORD, Va.- Ayana Avery scored 27 points including hitting 7-10 from behind the three point arc and Radford (11-9,8-3 BSC) connected on 10 three-point baskets in a 59-49 victory over the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team (7-13, 3-8 BSC) on Tuesday evening in the Dedmon Center.
Olivia Parker paced the offense for the Runnin' Bulldogs scoring 15 points and tying a career-high with 16 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Radford won the rebounding battle 46-42, but Gardner-Webb managed 18 offensive rebounds and turned the rebounds into 18 second chance points compared to just five for Radford.
Gardner-Webb forced 22 turnovers by the Highlanders and cashed in the mistakes from Radford into 21 points to just eight by the Highlanders.
The Highlanders shot just 22.6% in the first half but came out of the locker room and hit 11 of their 20 shots in the second half including 6-9 from long distance.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead at the under 16 media timeout on a three-pointer from Olivia Parker and jumpers from Heilig and Brown.
Radford would tie the game at seven on a three-pointer by Radford, before GWU hit back-to-back three pointers by Brown and Huntsman to take a 13-7 lead with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half.
Back-to-back three point shots by Avery cut the defecit to just one (14-13) halfway through the first period of play.
Jayda Worthy hit a layup to give the Highlanders their first lead of the game 17-16, but the Runnin' Bulldogs grabbed the lead right back on consecutive layups by Heilig and Parker to make the score 20-18 at the under eight media timeout.
Gardner-Webb held Radford to just 22.6% shooting in the first half and outscored the Highlanders 9-3 over the final eight minutes to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room.
The Runnin' Bulldogs continued their momentum into the second half taking their largest lead of the game 10 points (35-25) on a jumper by Hill.
Avery came out of the locker room on fire for the Highlanders scoring the team's first nine points, all on three pointers to cut the lead to 37-31 with 16:03 remaining the game.
Two free-throws by Jayda Worthy gave Radford its first lead 38-37, since the Highlanders led 17-16 with 8:27 left in the first half.
Parker would end the nearly nine minute scoring drought with a layup to give the lead back to GWU 39-38 with 7:50 to go in the second half. The layup for Parker was the first points for the Runnin' Bulldogs since the 16:37 mark of the second half.
Avery and Hill would trade baskets as the teams remained deadlocked at 41 with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation.
A free-throw by Foy capped a 10-0 run by Radford to match the Highlanders largest lead of the game, 10 points (51-41) with 5:14 left in the contest.
Gardner-Webb would get as close as seven points (52-45), but the Highlanders would hold off the late charge by the Runnin' Bulldogs and go on for the 59-49 victory
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Conway, S.C. to face Coastal Carolina at 4:00 p.m.
