Strong First Half Propels Women's Basketball To Victory Over Coastal Carolina

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Olivia Parker scored a game-high 20 points and Candace Brown dished out a game-high 8 assists as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team shot 46.0% on the afternoon in an 82-74 victory over Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs put on one of their best defensive performances on the season forcing 26 turnovers by the Chanticleers, and GWU converted the turnovers in 23 points compared to just 15 for Coastal Carolina.

Jessica Heilig came off the bench for GWU scoring 11 points and grabbing five rebounds as the Runnin' Bulldogs outscored Coastal 22-8 from its reserves off the bench.

Gardner-Webb used a full-court trapping defense to limit the Chanticleers to just 11 fastbreak points,  and the Runnin' Bulldogs played very aggressively on defense totaling 12 steals.

Anna Vogt scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Chanticleers on the afternoon. Coastal Carolina outrebounded GWU, 37-27, but the Chanticleers were limited to just 15 second chance points.

Kiera Currie ended her shooting slump going 3-4 from behind the arc and Gardner-Webb connected on 10 three-pointers compared to just three for Coastal Carolina.

Alexus Hill scored the first four points for the Runnin' Bulldogs and Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 7-4 lead with 17:10 remaining in the first half.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would continue to hold the lead until Stephanie Isaacs connected on her first three-point of the game to give the Chanticleers their first lead of the game 23-22 with 8:50 left in the first half.

Parker and Huntsman connected on back-to-back three points to take the lead back for GWU 31-29 with 6:43 remaining.

Currie scored five straight points for GWU hitting a three-pointer and scoring a layup as Gardner-Webb used a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to push its advantage to 10 with 3:22 remaining.

The Chanticleers would cut the defecit to nine on a jumper by Ced Gibson with 3:01 left, but the Runnin' Bulldogs scored the last four points of the first half to take a 46-33 into the halftime break. 

Parker and Brown scored back-to-back layups to extend the GWU lead to 21, its largest of the game, 57-36, with 13:23 left in the second half. 

Isaacs scored layup and hit the ensuing free-throw to convert the old fashioned three point play for the Chanticleers to cut the deficit to 61-49 with 8:17 remaining.

Coastal Carolina would get within five points with 2:05 left, but the Runnin' Bulldogs went 6-6 from the free-throw line over the remaing two minutes to take their first conference victory of the season, 82-74.

Gardner-Webb has a quick turnaround for its next game as the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Rock Hill, S.C. on Monday to face Winthrop at 7:00 p.m.
