CONWAY, S.C.- Jessica Heilig scored 17 points, grabbed three rebounds, and had four steals, and Candace Brown hauled down six rebounds as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team (8-13, 4-8 BSC) completed its first season-sweep of Coastal Carolina since the 2010-11 season (10-11, 4-8 BSC) with a 71-65 on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center.
Gardner-Webb had a solid game on the offensive end hitting 42.9% of its field goals (27-63) and did a great job of distributing the basketball totaling 19 assists on 27 made field goals.
The Runnin' Bulldogs forced 22 turnovers by the Chanticleers and converted the TO's into 22 points compared to just 11 for CCU.
Coastal Carolina outrebounded GWU 47-34 including hauling down 18 boards on the offensive end, but the Runnin' Bulldogs did a great job of limiting CCU to just 12 second chance points.
Jas Adams paced the Coastal offense scoring 17 points and Alexis Robinson was a beast on the glass for the Chanticleers hauling down a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with 14 points.
Midway through the first half, Candace Brown drilled her lone three-point shot to cut the Coastal lead to just three (14-11), but the Chanticleers responded with a three of their own by Adams to extend the lead back to six (17-11) with 10:30 remaining in the first half.
Adams was fouled on a three-point shot and connected on all three of her free throws, which gave CCU its largest lead of the first half, 26-16 with 8:06 left in the opening half.
Coming out of the media timeout, GWU quickly got back in the game going on a 10-0 spurt over the next three minutes to tie the game at 26.
Heilig scored the last points on the half on a layup with 12 seconds left and the Runnin' Bulldogs would take a two point lead (35-33) into the halftime break.
A jumper by Robinson with just over 17 minutes remaining in regulation cut the GWU deficit to just one (38-37), but Gardner-Webb responded with a quick 9-0 to push its lead to 47-37 at the under 16 media timeout.
Coastal Carolina cut the GWU to just six on two different occasions in the final 16 minutes, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would go on for the 71-65 victory to end a four-game losing streak.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Monday when it hosts Presbyterian in the first of a three-game home stand at 7:00 p.m.
