SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Redshirt sophomore Austin Trott was named Southern Conference December Wrestler of the Month, the league office announced Wednesday.
Trott (Kingsland, Ga. / Camden County HS) was dominant in the final month of 2014, going 6-0 and scoring bonus points for the Runnin' Bulldogs in each bout at 165 pounds.
The 6-foot-1 standout pinned VMI's Shabaka Johns in Gardner-Webb's SoCon opener, leading the 'Dogs to a 31-9 rout in Paul Porter Arena.
Trott followed with an exceptional weekend, going 5-0 at the 2014 Cleveland State Open to win the 165 weight class. He posted three major decisions to start the event, and pinned his final two opponents in short order for the title – sticking Ohio's Austin Reese in just 51 seconds for the semifinal win and pinning Michigan Wolverine Garrett Sutton in a quick 1:02 in the championship match.
He was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week on December 17 to recognize his dominance in Cleveland.
Trott, a 2014 NCAA Qualifier at 165 pounds, has continued to build a strong resume, forging a 15-4 overall mark this season (6-1 dual record). He leads the team with six pins in 2014-2015.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-4, 1-0 SoCon) return home for a dual match on Friday, January 9 – hosting Binghamton at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena.
