Gardner-Webb Edges Radford, 88-85, In Double Overtime Thriller

BOILING SPRINGS --- Jerome Hill (Adel, Ga.), Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Tyler Strange (Leominster, Mass.) each recorded a double-double to help Gardner-Webb rally from a 14-point second-half deficit, and survive for a thrilling 88-85 Big South Conference victory over Radford in double overtime on ESPNU Thursday evening in Paul Porter Arena.

Gardner-Webb (10-6, 2-1 Big South) shot 49.2 percent from the field on the night, including a 66.7 percent clip in both overtimes, as Radford (9-7, 0-3 Big South) knocked down 51.6 percent of its attempts from the floor in the contest. The Highlanders edged the Runnin' Bulldogs on the glass by a 37-34 margin, including a 25-22 advantage on the defensive boards.

Hill led the way for Gardner-Webb with 26 points and 11 rebounds, posting his seventh double-double of the season while going 10-of-20 from the floor. With his 26-point effort, the junior forward moves into fifth on the program's Division I all-time scoring list with 947 career points.

Nelson added 22 points and 10 boards, while Strange tallied 16 points and tied his career-high of 13 assists.

Strange and Jarvis Davis (Columbia, S.C.) each recorded a game-high four steals while Hill blocked a contest-best four shots. Isaiah Ivey (Georgetown, Ky.) and Davis chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, as Gardner-Webb placed five players in double figures.

Javonte Green led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting for Radford while adding eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. R.J. Price and Jalen Carethers chipped in 15 and 10 points, respectively, as Brandon Holcomb pulled down seven boards.

Gardner-Webb had to rally early in the first half, stringing together a 14-5 run to take a 14-9 lead on a pair of Hill free throws with 12:25 left on the clock. The Highlanders countered with a 16-7 spurt of their own, evening the tally at 21-21 following a Green jumper at the 8:52 mark.

After a Hill three-point play and a Davis trey gave Gardner-Webb a 27-21 advantage, Radford closed the half with a 15-0 run, holding the Runnin' Bulldogs scoreless for more than six minutes and carrying a 36-27 lead into the break.

Gardner-Webb slowly chipped away in the second half, closing the gap to 39-34 on a Nelson freebie before Radford answered with a 9-0 run, opening its largest lead of the game at 48-34 with 13:17 to play. The Runnin' Bulldogs would respond with a 16-4 surge, trimming the margin to 52-50 before pulling even at 52-52 on a pair of Ivey free throws.

A Strange three-pointer pushed the run to 30-8 moments later, giving Gardner-Webb a 64-56 advantage with 2:54 left on the clock. Radford quickly countered with a 6-0 run, knotting the score at 64-64 on a jumper by Green with 25 ticks left to send the game into overtime.

The teams stayed within one possession of each other for the balance of the first overtime, with Strange's last-second effort from deep three-point range hitting the side iron as the game went into a second extra period tied at 74-74.

The Runnin' Bulldogs kept fighting in the second overtime, taking an 81-77 lead on a timely trey by Strange with 3:08 left, and holding off a late charge by the Highlanders to enter the final minute up 83-81. Coach Tim Craft's squad would hold on from there, as Strange converted a trio of late free throws to close out the 88-85 victory.

Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Saturday when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Winthrop in a Big South clash at 7:00 pm on ESPN3.
