The Game
Gardner-Webb continues its Big South schedule on Saturday, January 10 when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Winthrop in a crucial conference clash at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena. The game will air live on ESPN3.
Series Notes
This marks the 21st all-time meeting between Gardner-Webb and Radford. Winthrop leads the all-time series, 12-8, with Gardner-Webb winning each of the last three meetings and four of the last six. The Runnin' Bulldogs swept the season series with the Eagles in 2013-14, including an 85-79 overtime win on February 22 in Paul Porter Arena.
The Coaches
Gardner-Webb's Tim Craft is in his second season with the Runnin' Bulldogs, leading GWU to an 18-15 record last winter while being named a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award.
Pat Kelsey is in his third season with Winthrop, carrying a 41-37 career record into tonight's contest. The Eagles are an even 7-7 so far this season, while opening conference play with a 2-1 mark after edging Presbyterian, 57-56, on Thursday evening.
Last Time Out
Jerome Hill (Adel, Ga.), Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Tyler Strange (Leominster, Mass.) each recorded a double-double to help Gardner-Webb rally from a 14-point second-half deficit, and survive for a thrilling 88-85 Big South Conference victory over Radford in double overtime on ESPNU Thursday evening in Paul Porter Arena.
Gardner-Webb (10-6, 2-1 Big South) shot 49.2 percent from the field on the night, including a 66.7 percent clip in both overtimes, as Radford (9-7, 0-3 Big South) knocked down 51.6 percent of its attempts from the floor in the contest. The Highlanders edged the Runnin' Bulldogs on the glass by a 37-34 margin, including a 25-22 advantage on the defensive boards.
Hill led the way for Gardner-Webb with 26 points and 11 rebounds, posting his seventh double-double of the season while going 10-of-20 from the floor. Nelson added 22 points and 10 boards, while Strange tallied 13 points and tied his career-high of 13 assists.
Strange and Jarvis Davis (Columbia, S.C.) each recorded a game-high four steals while Hill blocked a contest-best four shots. Isaiah Ivey (Georgetown, Ky.) and Davis chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, as Gardner-Webb placed five players in double figures.
Looking at Winthrop
The Eagles are off to a 2-1 start in Big South play this season after edging Presbyterian, 57-56, on Thursday evening. Keon Moore leads the way for Winthrop, averaging 18.3 points per game while also hauling down 4.7 rebounds per contest.
Andre Smith and Keon Johnson are close behind at 10.3 and 10.0 points per game, respectively, with Smith averaging 4.9 assists per contest to lead the team.
