Women's Soccer And Longwood Play To 1-1 Draw

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Shelby Hooe's sixth goal of the season in the 71st minute gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, but Amanda Spencer scored in the 89th minute as Longwood and the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in a Big South Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

Offensively, the Runnin' Bulldogs did not let the rain and wet conditions deter their offensive output, attempting 16 shots, while holding Longwood to just nine, and managing eight corner kicks compared to just two for the Lancers.

Brandi Arey paced the GWU attack with a game-high five shots, three of which she put on goal and Brittany DeLoach attempted a career-high three shots, while Jessica O' Bryant had two shots to lead the Lancers.

This was the second consecutive game Hooe found the back of the net, and despite being held to just one goal in the first six matches, the senior forward has notched five goals in the last eight games.

Both sides had trouble getting their offense started in the first half, as the two sides combined for just three shots and the game would remain scoreless at half.

Arey opened the second half with a great scoring chance in the 56th minute, firing a shot on goal from 25 yards out, but Maria Kirby punched the ball over the cross bar to keep the game tied.

Later on in the half, Arey put another shot on net, which was once again stopped by Kirby, but the rebound went right to Hooe who scored to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the lead.

Gardner-Webb continued to hold the 1-0 advantage and looked as if it would hold on for the victory, but with just under two minutes left in regulation, Spencer took a shot from distance that took a deflection and found its way past Brown and into the net to send the game into extra time.

The Runnin' Bulldogs outshot Longwood 6-3 in the overtime period and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but the match would ultimately end in a 1-1 draw.

Gardner-Webb takes to the road for its next match Wednesday, when it faces Radford at 7:00 p.m.
