Gardner-Webb's Win Streak Snapped at League-Leading Coastal Carolina Friday

CONWAY, S.C. --- Kaelyn Dyson (Holly Springs, N.C.) and Tyra Montour (Kennesaw, Ga.) each tallied seven kills, and Anna Pashkova (Iowa City, Iowa) added 18 digs as Coastal Carolina snapped Gardner-Webb's five-match winning streak with a straight set sweep on Friday evening in Big South Conference play.

Coastal Carolina (16-4, 8-0 Big South) won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15, recording 46 kills, 63 digs and a .287 hitting percentage while holding Gardner-Webb (9-15, 3-4 Big South) to 28 kills, six blocks and an attacking clip of .092.

"Coastal Carolina is a very good team with smart hitters," said head coach Leo Sayles. "We could not slow them down and were not able to produce points. We gave up opportunities to keep us close with unforced errors, but great teams like Coastal expose your weaknesses. We will refocus and prepare to battle tomorrow at CSU."

Dyson and Montour both paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with seven kills as Devin Judge (Marietta, Ga.), Sydney Marshall (Norcross, Ga.) and Jene Lee (San Dimas, Calif.) each added three smashes. Pashkova led the back row with 18 digs while Dyson, Lee and Marshall each posted three blocks. Justine Bowers (Dana Point, Calif.) dished out 19 assists on the night.

Leah Hardeman led the way for Coastal Carolina with a match-high 16 kills, attacking at a .314 clip as Lian Bernett and Eszter Nagy added nine and seven kills, respectively. Sara Boothe dished out a match-high 31 assists, while Nagy posted a contest-best four blocks. Bernett and Carla Cahill tallied 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

Gardner-Webb fought hard throughout the first set, evening the tally at 11-11 midway through the frame following a Montour smash that capped a 6-4 spurt. Coastal quickly countered with a 7-1 run of its own, opening an 18-12 lead on a solo stuff by Nagy before stretching the margin to 23-16 with a kill from Alise Petersone.

The Chanticleers would close out the set from there, answering a Lee smash with back-to-back points to claim a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Runnin' Bulldogs kept battling in the second, rallying from a 12-8 deficit with four straight points to knot the score at 12-12 on a smash from Montour. Gardner-Webb would stay within striking distance for the next several minutes until Coastal regained control with an 8-1 run, capping the set and taking a 2-0 lead in the match following a Hardeman kill.

Coastal carried the momentum into the third, opening the frame with a 13-3 surge that was finished off by a kill from Natasa Savovic. The Runnin' Bulldogs would battle back with a 9-2 run, closing the gap to 15-12 following a Dyson smash. The Chants then answered with 10 of the next 13 points to quell the rally and seal the sweep after Bernett pushed Gardner-Webb to set point with a kill.

Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Saturday when the Runnin' Bulldogs take on Charleston Southern in Big South play at 5:00 pm in Charleston, S.C.
