CONWAY, S.C.- The Runnin' Bulldogs outshot Coastal Carolina 5-3 in the second half and held a 6-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities, but Daniella Famili scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute to life the Chanticleers to a 1-0 victory over the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team on Saturday morning at Doug Shaw Stadium.
"Another toss loss today. I thought we played well. We created some excellent chances, but the Coastal goalkeeper came up with some big saves when we had the momentum, remarked Gardner-Webb women's soccer head coach Mike Varga.
Offensively, Brandi Arey had one of her best game on the offensive end for the Runnin' Bulldogs with six shots, four of which she put on frame, while Amber Adams totaled five shots and had four shots on goal to lead the Chanticleers.
"We are still competing and play some good soccer, and I am confident the results will come."
Keely Brown faced five shots while in goal for Gardner-Webb making four saves, while Becca Austin stopped all five shots she faced to earn her sixth victory of the season for Coastal.
Arey had two shots in the first six minutes of action and took a third shot in the 18th minute, but Austin made all three saves to keep the game scoreless.
Jessica Ferguson had an opportunity to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the lead with a scoring chance with six seconds left in the half, but Austin once again made the save as both sides headed to halftime deadlocked at zero.
The Runnin' Bulldogs clamped down on defense on the second half, limiting Coastal to just three shots in the second half, while taking five attempts toward the Chanticleer goal. Despite the solid defensive half, GWU could not manage to get a shot past Austin and the game would head to extra time.
Just three minutes into the first overtime period, Famili was the first to a ball that was crossed into the box and she tapped it into the net to lift Coastal to the 1-0 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to face Campbell at 7:00 p.m.
