CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Senior Nathan Lile continued his winning ways Saturday, taking home the top times in three events this weekend at the Virginia Tech/UMBC Tri-Meet, held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va.
The Gardner-Webb men's and women's swim teams both went 0-2 this weekend, facing stiff competition in ACC power and nationally ranked #28 Virginia Tech men's team and #25 ranked women's team as well as defending CCSA conference winners UMBC men's team and defending America East Conference champs UMBC women's team.
Lile started off Saturday with a win in the 50 free with a time of 20.74. The Waynesville, N.C. native followed with a win in the 100 free, timing in at 46.05, and topped off his day with a win in the 100 fly with a time of 50.11.
Lile also aided in the Runnin' Bulldogs third-place finish in the 200 medley relay along with junior Connor Bos, freshman Jake Ennis, and sophomore Tyler Gomez with a time of 1:33.71.
Senior Luke Denman had a noteworthy finish coming in third in the 1,000 free, timing in at 9:42.61 just a little over three seconds behind the event winner.
The Gardner-Webb men came in fourth-place in the 400 medley relay with a team of Bos, sophomores Hal McKay, Cameron Pou, and freshman Josh Clarke.
Clarke individually placed well in the 200 back finishing fifth (1:54.50), while Bos placed sixth in the 100 back (52.21) and seventh in the 200 back (1:57.69)
The Gardner-Webb women enjoyed strong performances this weekend as well, as Giorgie Graves placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 57.23, while sophomore Lili Toth earned third-place finishes in the 100 and 200 back (58.62; 2:23.48).
Freshman Whitney Peters and Tessa Walsh each enjoyed fourth-place finishes this weekend. Peters paced the Runnin' Bulldog women in the 200 back (2:24.18) and Walsh led GWU in the women's 200 fly (2:08.55), followed closely by sophomore London Schumacher (2:08.63).
Sophomore Lauren Oglesby also had a strong showing for Garnder-Webb in the 1,000 free posting a time of 10:29.18 finishing fourth overall.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action next Saturday, November 7 where the men will face off against East Carolina University and the women's team will compete against ECU and Campbell University.
