BOILING SPRINGS --- Anna Pashkova (Iowa City, Iowa) tallied 14 digs and Nicole Celarek (Bensenville, Ill.) added seven smashes as High Point University held Gardner-Webb to 22 kills in a straight-set sweep in Big South Conference play on Saturday afternoon in Paul Porter Arena.
High Point (19-7, 9-1 Big South) won the match by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-13, recording 45 kills and attacking at a .381 clip while limiting Gardner-Webb (9-17, 3-7 Big South) to 22 smashes, 41 digs and a hitting percentage of .056.
Celarek led the way for Gardner-Webb with seven smashes, attacking at a .462 clip, while Tyra Montour (Kennesaw, Ga.) tallied her 800th career kill with four in the contest. Pashkova posted a team-high 14 digs, as Amanda Sahm (Marion, Iowa) dished out 13 assists and Kaelyn Dyson (Holly Springs, N.C.) recorded three blocks.
Cameryn Freiberg paced the Panthers with nine kills on 12 swings, as Molly Livingston, Savannah Angel and Haley Barnes each added seven smashes. Gabi Mirand dished out 30 assists, while Annemarie Chin tallied a match-high 18 digs. Barnes and Livingston both recorded three blocks.
High Point was in control for much of the match, opening an 18-7 first-set lead with an Abby Broadstreet smash to cap an 11-1 surge. The Panthers would close out the set from there, finishing the frame with a 7-4 spurt to take a 1-0 lead in the match following a Freiberg kill.
Freiberg and the Panthers carried the momentum into the second, stringing together an 11-2 run early in the set to push the margin to 16-6 on a Broadstreet smash. After Celarek answered with a kill, High Point capped the set with a 9-6 spurt to take a commanding 2-0 advantage in the match on a kill from Angel.
The Panthers completed the sweep in the third, opening a 17-8 lead with a smash from Katie Tylman before closing the set on a 7-4 run.
Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Friday, November 6 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to take on Winthrop in Big South play at 7:00 pm.
