CLINTON, S.C. – Tyrell Maxwell ran for 105 yards and passed for a touchdown to lead Gardner-Webb to a 14-10 road win at Presbyterian Saturday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-5, 2-2 Big South) won for the first time away from home since November 23, 2013 – a 20-13 win over the Blue Hose. Saturday's victory was the 13th for Gardner-Webb in Clinton, S.C., since 1970 (13-7).
Presbyterian (1-7, 0-3 Big South) took advantage of a Gardner-Webb fumble early in the second quarter to strike first on Halloween afternoon. Ugonna Akoh forced the bobble at the GWU 46-yard line and Curtis Bey recovered to set the Blue Hose up in plus territory.
Malik Risher carried nine yards on first down to energize the crowd and Quahlin Patterson darted 25 yards on the next play to set up the score. Devron Glenn finished the drive with a 12-yard burst to give the Blue Hose a 7-0 lead with 7:36 to play before halftime.
Maxwell would have an answer on the ensuing drive. The former Edisto (S.C.) High star dashed 12 yards on second down to get out to his own 37 and found tight end Mike Estes for a 38-yard gain down the seam on the next play to put the 'Dogs in business.
Kerry Bernard bulled 14 yards to the Blue Hose 11-yard line and after a pair of short runs – receiver Jacob Henderson's pass into the end zone was interfered with to set GWU up with 1st-and-goal at the two.
Bernard wasted no time finishing the drive, punching in on first down to tie the score with 4:21 to play before intermission.
Neither team could make a push the rest of the half, with each of the combined three drives in the final four minutes going three-and-out.
Gardner-Webb marched down to Presbyterian's 16-yard line on the first drive of the third quarter, but a 34-yard field goal missed wide left with 11:22 remaining in the quarter.
The GWU defense held firm on the next drive to get the ball back quickly and Estes was the target of choice on a big play for Maxwell once again. The two hooked up on third down for a 33-yard touchdown that gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 14-7 lead with 7:10 to play in the third quarter.
The Gardner-Webb defense would make the lead stand. After allowing the Blue Hose excellent field position on a drive that started near midfield late in the third, GWU buckled down in the red zone and limited the damage to a 26-yard field goal by Brett Norton with 12:53 left in regulation.
Maxwell then put the offense on his back once again, engineering a clock-grinding drive that chewed up 6:43 before a fourth-down conversion chance fell two yards short at the Presbyterian 26. Maxwell converted two third-down passes to keep the drive alive and forced a pass interference on third down later in the same drive.
Presbyterian wouldn't be able to take advantage, losing seven yards on its next drive – as Chad Geter tackled Risher for a four-yard loss on second down and OJ Mau sacked Ben Cheek for a six-yard loss to force a punt.
GWU ran another 2:50 off the clock on its next drive that pushed out to midfield, leaving Presbyterian with only 1:36 to work with and no timeouts after Andrew Komornik pinned the Blue Hose back at their 11-yard line.
Aaron Cook, Jebrai Regan, Mau and P.J. Fuimaono led a fierce pass rush on the ensuing drive to keep the Blue Hose pinned. After an incomplete pass on fourth down, Maxwell took a knee twice to end the game.
Gardner-Webb finished the game with 17 first downs, moving the chains regularly to gain a five-minute advantage in possession time. The 'Dogs totaled 280 yards offensively, including 183 on the ground and were very effective controlling the clock for 10:41 in the fourth quarter.
Maxwell finished 8-for-15 for 97 yards through the air, completing two of those passes for 71 yards to Estes – the All-Big South Conference tight end. Jacob Henderson was a favorite target as well, catching three passes for 26 yards – with two going for first downs on conversions in the fourth quarter.
His production on the ground came on 20 carries, with a long rush of 22 yards. That production helped GWU convert five times on third down (38.5 percent). Bernard carried 14 times for a career-high 56 yards and a score in his first significant action since the season opener.
Komornik punted six times for a clutch 42.3 average and his 48-yarder late in the game pinned the Blue Hose at the 11-yard line.
Geter led a salty defensive effort for Gardner-Webb, collecting nine tackles (six solo), 3.0 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also forced a fumble early in the game that was recovered by the Blue Hose but stalled a drive.
Mau added eight total tackles (five solo) and a sack from his nose guard spot and Cook made six stops and had an early sack that set the tone defensively. Trey Lucas finished with seven hits, including a pair of bone-jarring stops. Lucas' hit on a fake field goal early in the game prevented a first down.
Presbyterian managed just 195 yards of total offense, with just 35 coming through the air. Cheek was sacked four times and hurried several more times. Patterson and sophomore Darrell Bridges led the ground game with 38 yards each – as five runners teamed up for the bulk of the Blue Hose 160 yards on the ground.
Donelle Williams led the Blue Hose defense with 11 tackles (four solo).
Gardner-Webb faces a tall task on the road again next weekend, traveling to face top-ranked Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. The game will kick off at 3:30 pm and will be televised by American Sports Network (ASN).
